“One person is not allowed to raise taxes—the constitution forbids it.”
@SenRandPaul slams Trump’s tariffs as unconstitutional, calling them a tax on Americans— and he’s right.

“Does anyone have sympathy?”
none here ... the entire U.S. FedGov was financed by tariffs starting from day one of George’s first term, and when that wasn’t quite enough, distilled spirits were taxed by Congress, the first tax of the new nation ... this was the case until the income tax was levied ...
aside from all of that, grossly imbalanced tariffs are the modern form of war between nations, and the U.S. has been badly losing ever since it saved the world in WWII and then rebuilt it at the expense of our taxpayers, and every since then our allies and our former enemies decided to f*** us instead of thanking us ...
i used to think rand paul would make a fine President, but he’s recently revealed himself to be a rigid thinker, with “principles” that are set in concrete and can never be violated no matter the circumstances ...
and everyone here should remember it was “principled conservatives” who drove the GOP into the ground, and their tiny remainder still continue to squeak about their “conservative principles” in NYT/WaPo/ABC/CBS/NBC/CNN, while the great and powerful Donald Trump saved our nation from the “principled conservatives” and their uniparty allies, the hard-left fascists ...
Is Rand against reducing or eliminating the income tax? The DOGE savings is now grater than $2,200 per taxpayer. Add in the income from Tariffs and this old retired guy sees a light at the end of the tunnel. The IRS/income tax is a real cluster... it sure would be nice to see it go away.
For those who cannot be bothered to watch his 30 minute speech here’s a handy clip.
He does not mince his words Freepers and is adamant this policy is wrong, a tax and unconstitutional.
Does anyone have sympathy?
I always have sympathy for the mentally challenged.
Rand, Get all those nations with tariffs on our products removed and I’ll listen. Until then, please shut up.
You still haven’t heard that sucking sound Ross Perot was talking about decades ago. You might pull your head out of your ass.
Seems to me some divas in the Republican Party weep over the US asking the rest of the world to charge the same price for our products as they charge us is unfair but where are they when low level judges who defy the Constitution and seek to usurp the power of the Executive Branch to govern?
He’s an idiot. Canada traces the living hell out of our farmers. This is repeated around the world. Rand doesn’t lift a finger against the job killing tariffs against us. Someone tries to level the field and he hyperventilates. And mr Constitution might do well to remember that our founders loved tariffs.
It’s nice to see that SOMEBODY in Congress is finally stirred enough to do something about anything. OH, wait; he’s posturing for the cameras. That doesn’t count.
In theory but not in practice. When it comes to trading with America, which is the premier market in the world, some of the cost of tariffs will be paid by the foreign businesses or the country of origin in order to remain competitive. If your product is priced higher than The American market will bear, you will lose market share and lots of money. Walmart has asked Chinese suppliers to slash prices on their goods to offset the impact of the Trump administration’s tariffs. The implications are if they don’t, Walmart will be forced to find another source for many products. It’s a big world.
Rand Paul is not anti-tariff.
He clearly supports disproportionately high Canadian tariffs on U.S. goods.
He has lost all credibility with this RINO stunt.
So what is Rand’s plan to reindustrialize the US? Oh, he doesn’t have one.
He thinks multi-trillion dollar trade deficits are a good thing?
It’s money leaving the country and we have become poorer over the years.
He is an idealogue.
Tariffs = Fair Trade
Sen Rand Paul has had his a foot in the Rino area many times this is one of them.
Randy Paul once again showed why NO ONE ever trusts Libertarians. They hate America, and exist only to march around in their little pure bubbles. He and Massie are useless spoogetoads.
We are FINALLY after 60 years adopting a policy of taxing foreign nations rather than Americans, a policy that led to two of the three biggest booms in American history. (The last was due only to the post-WW II “Golden Accident”)
Rand has to go. I can’t stand him.
Rand jealous no one would vote for him.
You are only describing ways to avoid paying tariffs or offsetting the impact of tariffs. A tax is a tax even if you can avoid it or lessen its impact. Taxes are imposed to raise revenue or change behavior or both.
Walmart can try switching to other suppliers and in many instances they will be able to. But every supplier will take advantage of their competitor being hobbled by a tariff and raise their prices.
In the US car prices are going up. One of the goal of tariffs is to bring back good paying jobs. The reason they aren’t good paying right now is that prices, in the face of cheap imports, are too low and don’t support high wage jobs. With tariffs prices on domestically made car can rise to a level that supports higher wages.
Here is the problem. Why I don’t agree with Rand on this.
Until the 16th Amendment, the entire federal government was supported basically by Tariffs. After the 16th amendment, Congress lost interests in Tariffs and delegated the authority to the executive branch.
Obviously, Tariffs have much to do with foreign relations, and settlements with other nations. That puts them squarely in the Executive’s corner, ie State Department, since the nation no longer needed Tariffs for revenue since it had the 16th Amendment.
Tariffs may or may not be a direct tax on Americans, but that power was ceded by Congress. Further, Congress hasn’t even made a budget in like 2 years, nor has it ‘balanced’ a budget since George Bush in 2001 (to my knowledge).
Basically Congress has not done what it was intended to do, that is to be the purse strings of government and to ensure that the money is wisely used. Not even Rand Paul could argue with that statement. So, whilst Congress has been an utter failure to it’s responsibilities, Trump has been elected to ‘fix’ the nation. Trump cannot fix ‘Congress’ but he can ‘fix’ the spending and deficit problem, and free trade problems, by instituting Tariffs.
What I would tell Rand Paul is that Congress is the Problem, Not Trump. That Congress allowing the spending that has devalued the currency as well as destroyed middle class America. Rand Paul is CONGRESS, Trump is NOT CONGRESS. Rand Paul needs to take accountability and make certain that it does it’s job FIRST, before he gets in Executive lane. I think Rand is just spouting off, since he could clearly introduce measures such as a Balanced Budget Amendment at anytime. He could include active, past, Congress from loosing benefits and pay if Congress cannot deliver a balanced budget.
What do I hear from Rand......CRICKETS. The only person right now campaigning for a Balanced Budget Amendment is Gov. DeSantis of Florida.

Congress needs to serve the people, not themselves and their portfolios.
Did Rand fall and hit his head hard on the cement curb...again?
You should change your handle.
Lets all take a deep breath here and remember that Rand Paul who I very much admire on several levels is an eye doctor not an economist and apparently not an historian either.
Prior to the income tax our country was very ably funded by tariffs. So yes they are constitutional and they bring in a lot of revenue. Will they cause some temporary pain? Probably but it will be good in the long run because we are otherwise most certainly going to default on our debt and soon.
I believe that Trump thinks he can generate enough money through tariffs and a reduced government to do away with the income tax or cease taxing workers who make $150,000 or less which is 93% of the working public.
I’d rather pay $5 more for a pair of jeans and $3,000 more for a car and keep all my earnings.
