I happened to live in New Orleans immediately post-Katrina. I was doing volunteer work to help gut some houses for rebuilding in the virtually all-black 6th Ward.

The older folks did whatever they could to help the process along; one gentleman was blind, had only one working arm, and in a wheelchair, and about all he could do was make lemonade and bring it to us workers. But he did what he could to help his house be restored, and apologized that he couldn’t do more.

The younger generations? Once us volunteers showed up, they stopped their half-hearted efforts to work on their own homes and just sat on their asses watching. Why? Because they felt entitled to someone else taking care of them (and thought we were federal workers, not volunteers, although I don’t think it would’ve mattered in the least).

I’ve never forgotten that experience. The old, blind, crippled guy with a bus pass around his neck? Did what he could.

The family literally next door with two escalades parked out front and all the latest electronic toys? Could hear them occasionally making referring to us as lame-ass crackers while they smoked their weed.

Education on what’s going on isn’t enough. We’ve got to break these hideous, multi-generational dependencies upon government that LBJ’s ‘Great Society’ brought about.

I fear the next great dependency will be aging single AWFLs who run to big daddy government as their husband (supporter) of last resort.

The yoke of entitlement and dependency hung on the neck of our society most certainly is factored in. And that attitude also exists outside of the stereotypical institutionalized underclass since the reach of the tendrils of the corrupt administrative state has permeated all the various sectors of society and industry where corrupt interference came to be traditionally expected if not sought out and welcomed. There are whole blocs of constituents who have come to rely upon it, hence some public grousing about some of the programs paused or even halted by DOGE action. See it on the local news from time to time these days, though the reports are rather incurious and always fail to delve into the backgrounds of those programs and their effectiveness, if any, just that they have been shut.
