A veteran real estate developer and friend of former President Barack Obama is vying to build a 26-story hotel blocks away from the incoming Obama Presidential Center in Jackson Park.
The developer, Allison Davis, submitted a rezoning application to City Council last week for a parcel of vacant land he owns at 6402-20 S. Stony Island Avenue. The plot, currently zoned for a community shopping district, needs council approval to get rezoned as a planned business development, clearing the way for the hotel’s construction.
Davis is an attorney who co-founded the law firm Davis, Miner, Barnhill & Galland, where Obama worked prior to his political career.
Planned for the southwest corner of 64th Street and Stony Island Avenue, the 36,087-square-foot development includes 250 rooms, covered parking, retail, office space and an outdoor terrace with foliage and grills.
The proposal comes a little more than a year before the Obama Presidential Center is slated to open across the street in Jackson Park, an $800 million development that promises to draw tens of thousands to the neighborhood each year – and a flurry of investment. According to an investigation by the Illinois Answers Project, investors have been buying up property in neighborhoods around the park at higher rates than anywhere else in the city, sending fears of gentrification and displacement among residents soaring.
According to documents submitted to City Council, Davis filed the application as head of Aquinnah Investment Trust, an investment group. The building will be represented by DLA Piper LLC.
The zoning reclassification application was referred to the Committee on Zoning, Landmarks and Building Standards, which will meet on April 15.

Obama Central is an “$800 million development that promises to draw tens of thousands to the neighborhood each year – and a flurry of investment.”
LOL...it might draw TENS to the neighborhood each year.
Even “tens of thousands” comes nowhere near justifying the almost one billion dollar investment. It’s a temple to the Magic Negro and nothing else.
Good point..
I seldom hear anyone mention that this Obama thing is in a bad neighborhood in Chicago.
How many people really want to stay at that hotel?
WHO wants to go to CRIME RIDDEN CHICAGO?
When I read that the Obama center wants a 26 storey hotel nearby, I immediately thought about the infamous, now demolished Cabrini-Green public housing unit in Chicago.
**The opening credits of the old TV show “Good Times” featured exterior shots of those projects.
Excellent place to house illegals.
PUBLIC INFO ABOUT MICHELLE”S DIVORCE FILINGS WILL FINISH OFF OBAMA
Barry was the only person I can think of who got near instant permission to remodel a beach house on Oahu. I know people since the 90s who have STILL been denied permits for stupid thinks like repairing a fence, laying some concrete for a walkway, roof repair, etc. One guy up the Kam highway has had to keep his land vacant for nearly 30 years because of the jerks at city hall. Ask the people who live along “the loop” in Lani Kai how it goes when they try to remodel their houses. And those people aren’t exactly poor run down locals. These are very very wealthy people. Ask them about the sea wall the state wants them to move before they can even make a deck in their back yard.
BUT here comes Barry. Buys “The Robins Nest” and tuh duh. suddenly the Hawaiian authorities have a change of heart. Could it be the money Barry showered on Oahu? The federal building that has been under contruction for 20 years with an endless budget? The stupid light rail money? NAH...
Who in their right mind would go to a hotel on Chicongo’s south side which is rife with crime, murders and so forth? LOL. Maybe this will house illegal aliens at taxpayers’ expense. What a joke!

++++++++++
Maximum repellent factor. Crappy neighborhood, crappy former president, crappy clientele visiting crappy presidential center. Nope, I’ve got litter boxes to clean. More enjoyable and safer.
Working for one of the larger local companies on Oahu for thirty years, (Retired and sailed away in ‘07) I found that plenty kala would take care of any zoning or permit problems.
