Tesla drivers are being slapped with eye-watering extra charges to park their cars in private garages across NYC with “luxury” or “exotic” surcharges for certain models, sources told The Post.
The biggest parking garage management companies in the Big Apple charge drivers hundreds of dollars for monthly parking — but those who drive luxury, electric or oversized cars are increasingly subject to surcharges that can cost them up to an additional $1,000 per month.
And that doesn’t even include charging the batteries!
Wynne Parking President Kyle Halperin told The Post that the surcharge was really about covering insurance costs and described it as part of “a risk analysis”.
According to him, that’s why it is applied to some non-luxury cars, such as Teslas.
“There’s an industry wide standard for multiple garage management companies where [applying the surcharge] is based on things that affect insurance such as the value and weight — Tesla batteries weigh more,” than ordinary car batteries, he said.
“The luxury expense for a parking garage is focused on insurance costs and the amount of space that is required to protect a vehicle from any kind of significant or insignificant damage.
“So if a parking garage is paying additional insurance because it regularly houses a car worth $500k, the threshold for insurance is greater than it is if insuring a $50k car.”

I think we all know what this is REALLY about

No- you don’t...
“but those who drive luxury, electric or oversized cars are increasingly subject to surcharges that can cost them up to an additional $1,000 per month.”
This is in fact true- for year now whenever i’ve driven into NYChitty, which isn’t often, and park our SUV at a lot, we are always charged extra....this is not new
I thought we were supposed to buy electric vehicles to “save da earf”? shouldn’t the government be making it attractive to own one ?
State Farm recently removed EV chargers from their parking garages because of the increased risk of fires. I would think it likely they would ding their clients for the increased risk of parking and charging EVs in parking decks.
I saw an interesting analysis of car sales by price. The most expensive cars, those over $130 are selling very well. Some of the “average” price cars, now $47,000 are selling at a moderate, reduced rate. The low-end cars, around twenty thousand, are not selling at all. The conclusion was that wealthy people are unaffected by the present economy. But people at the low end, who obviously need to buy transportation at the rate they bought it three years ago, simply aren’t. They can’t afford to buy even the cheapest cars. What I’m seeing in places like my local Walmart, is people are nursing along cars that were past their best by ten to fifteen years ago.
They’re trying to make it easier for thugs to destroy the Teslas, vandalize them or both.
Keep voting for hchul and her ilk ny- sheesh! About as blind as California. Do ny, and indeed the nation a huge favor and get vote out dems for about 20 years so that ny has a chance to recover and be the state it is meant to be!
Well, “save da earff” AND enrich the powers that be- they just leave that last part off.
People like us in the lower end bracket have had to go from barely getting by with what we got, to now having to get by when everything costs twice what it did (and more in some cases), under pres Trump’s first term. Nearly everything is twice as much now, despite our cola not being increased to keep pace with the doubling of prices- so i5hink that is why people have had to stop purchasing efen th3 low end cars
I suspect this is more of an issue of the increased risk of battery fires. The insurance risk of having these inside a structure.
Sure, other companies make EVs but anyone who is in the market for an EV is gonna get a Tesla because that's all they make so they're the best at it.
Case in point, Senator Mark Kelly bragging on trading in his Tesla for a gas-burning Chevy SUV. Sure, he could've bought one of the many models of EVs that Chevy has but he knows they suck, so he didn't.
I see more and more cars with "do-it-yourself" bodywork where someone drilled holes in a fender, pulled out a dent so the wheels wouldn't rub it, and did nothing more; no bondo or touchup paint. It's like 2008 again.
I've also been surprised at seeing Saturn vehicles on the road, realizing the Saturn brand ended in 2010. I get the feeling grandma passed away and someone in the family has the car as a daily driver.

Also I heard that parking garages were not designed for the extra weight of EVs.
“Mark Kelly bragging on trading in his Tesla for a gas-burning Chevy SUV. Sure, he could’ve bought one of the many models of EVs that Chevy has but he knows they suck, so he didn’t.”
Kelly showing his idiocy coming and going.
He already paid for his tesla and if he traded it in he more than likely lost his ass.
And as I understand it chevys aren’t exactly quality vehicles nowadays.
A Walmart parking lot might not be the best place to gage the health of the car market. That said, there was a poll out in the recent past that suggested only 17% of auto buyers could afford a new car. I just bought a new a car after my 16 year old car started to have issues and acquiring parts was a major issue. I had a nice run with it, but it was time to get rid of it. My family members are mostly the same way. They buy new or slightly used and drive the cars into the ground.
Take them to court! Wait.... its NYC, never mind.
They say they are charging Teslas more because their batteries are heavier.
Makes sense, if Teslas are sinking into the concrete. /s
That was my first thought.
The left is punishing anyone who doesn’t toe the party line. As usual.
Problem for them is, far as I can determine, most Tesla owners are leftists.
I find that hard to believe from a mechanical engineering standpoint(structures/statics) that a parking structure would not be designed to hold them. Considering they do not weigh anymore than a full size pick up truck.
My Tacoma double cab weighs 5000#s empty. There are several SUVs that are over 6000. A Tesla model Y weighs 4416#s. A model 3 is between 3582 and 4065 pounds. An F150 can be 5500#s.
