Right.

A mustang was something like $2700 and the radarange was $400.

An internet calculator says thats about $4500 today.

Imagine someone trying to sell someone a machine to warm a cup of coffee for $4500 today.

You would really need to question that persons fiscal responsibility. Certainly not anything a blue collar had at home.

My parents purchased their first microwave oven in late 1969 after my dad returned as XO/CO of USS Arlington. The ship was berthed at 32nd Street Naval Station. Dad's next billet was XO of 32nd Street Naval Station where he served from 1970 to 1977.

The first night we had the new microwave oven, mom decided to try it out by "defrosting" a 1 pound "chub" of ground beef. She placed the "chub" on a Corelle plate and set the timer for 20 minutes. It was smoking well before the timer elapsed. A hard cylinder of "meat" in a pool of hot fat wrapped in melting plastic. What a mess. We learned that microwaves work very differently from other types of ovens.
