I posted the story just for fun. Obviously not many records were kept, which made the author’s effort difficult. I will guess a conscience effort was probably made not to know a lot about what happened. I like this one quote; “Haffenden knew that a strike [longshoremen} at that point in the war would be devastating and tasked his underworld informants with ensuring Bridges would not become a problem to their operations. A recorded phone conversation from a legally placed New York D.A.’s Office wiretap confirms that on 25 November 1942, Haffenden asked Joe Lanza if there would be any more problems with Bridges. Lanza simply replied, “You won’t have any. I’ll see to that.” Sounds like Harry was made an offer he couldn't refuse.

There have been other not well documented stories that the Mob thought the Nazis were a bigger enemy than U.S. law enforcement. Some mobsters were of Jewish origin which had to be considered.

The one trait that separated the “families” from all the subsequent non-Italian crime groups: they loved America.

They may have been criminals, but they were patriots.

It’s a colorful story. The Allies captured the Abwehr files after the war. There weren’t any Axis saboteurs on the docks, and certainly the communist dominated labor unions weren’t going to hinder shipping at this point in the war.
