Ontario Premier Doug Ford is imposing a 25% surcharge on electricity the province supplies to three U.S. states. Ford announced the higher costs to be paid by Americans in Michigan, Minnesota, and New York which buy Canadian power. Ontario might even turn it off.
Ford said average electricity customers in those states can expect their utility bills to go up an average of $100 per month ($69 US) until the trade war with the U.S. comes to an end.
Ford promised in a series of media appearances and a press release he wouldn't hesitate to increase the surcharge or get even tougher if things don't change rapidly. "Let me be clear, I will not hesitate to increase this charge. If necessary, if the United States escalates, I will not hesitate to shut the electricity off completely. Believe me when I say I do not want to do this."

I read that total US electricity imports from Canada is $3B per year, while total US spending on electricity is about $400B per year. So, no big loss and maybe it will knock some sense in the the Northeast NIMBYs as far as power plants go.
It’s time we cut the retarded child dependant loose. Let the Chinese have them.
US needs to fire up our own plants and stop buying from them.
” maybe it will knock some sense in the the Northeast NIMBYs as far as power plants go.”
Smartest people in the world.
Its a “grid” right? These people just shift suppliers and tap into the grid. Canada on the other hand can’t use its electricity not sold and the entire loss goes to their bottom line.
We learned that in high school: A protest against the school was that a big chunk of 3600 kids secretly brought their lunch. And we all stood by as the lunchroom people dumped 1000 meals in the dumpster. The school got the point and did not ignore us the next time.
PS, the protest was about sending our friend Bobo home for wearing a wife beater T shirt when the girls were allowed to wear pretty much the same thing.
No doubt Beijing is pulling the strings and calling the shots here, and not their Canadian puppets in Ottawa and in the provinces. Anything to disrupt the American economy and stick it to Trump politically will make Xi a happy camper!
Every tariff increase from Ontario should be answered with a tariff increase to goods imported from Quebec, stating that it’s all Ontario’s fault.
Let Quebec get angry and invoke their wrath upon Ontario and the rest of Canada.
End Canadian medical tourism.
Building a northern wall could be good for our economy. Canada will be the UK sooner than later. We need to protect ourselves and interests.
Typical short term thinking without considering long term consequences. I sometimes wonder how politicians get into power but then I remember they need only be smarter than the electorate.
Very well done:)
Yup. Pres Trump should go on TV and say something like “your new pm is being very dumb- he has decided to wage an econ9mic war agaisnt the us, a war he can’t possibly win, and it will end up hurting all of Canada. The good people of Canada should elect so eone who is much smarter than him in your nest election in October, because it is clear that he is too immature to run a nation. Do yourself a massive favor Canada, and vote conservative and reclaim your nation. “Make Canada Great again”
That is ANOTHER thing Trump should be doing, BUILDING A BIG ASS FEDERAL COAL POWER PLANT IN EVERY STATE.
They need us, we don’t need them. Maybe then all these Canadians that snowbird down here (Az, TX, Fla) can go back.
fine....let’s stop all US-Canada trade. see how that works out for ya...
and take their speedos with them ...
Doug Ford has been a loud mouth loose cannon ever since he was mayor of Toronto.
Buying electricity from Canada made long term sense because we had this agreement since the 1990s called NAFTA.
Canada has more hydro power being produced than they will ever use. It also cost a lot less to build the transmission lines to bring it south than it would to build new power plants.
This is why Eversource here in New England decided to build a transmission line to bring power from Quebec down through Maine to hook up with existing grid structure to serve southern New England. Northern New England(Maine, NH & VT) do not need the electricity. MA, RI & CT do. Just that transmission line is over $1 Billion.
The fact is some areas of North America and the world are more gifted with natural resources than other. Canada, WA, TN, ID have an abundance of hydro power. MI, MN, NY have built as many dams as possible. New England has built as many dams as possible. There are no other rivers to dam up.
NY built the first hydro electric project in the country at Niagara Falls back in the late 1800s. It was designed by Nikoli Tesla. Financed by George Westinghouse.
NY is full of natural gas and pipelines. Yes, they outlawed fracking, BUT they have an abundance of natural gas even without fracking.
The issue is New England has ZERO natural gas. They can not get any new gas lines permitted because the NIMBY effect.
All the existing pipelines are full coming into New England.
Therefore, Eversource buys NG delivered to Boston on LNG tankers from Texas/LA/MD. They compete in price with anyone else those producers can sell their LNG to in Europe or anywhere on the Atlantic Ocean. So, when Europe NG prices went up because of that issue with Russia in Ukraine it indirectly affected the price of LNG delivered to Boston.
The US should never have become dependent on Canada for power.
