Wiki actually has a decent essay on the Durupinar Site.

Identified in 1948 and had some interest until 1960 when no artifacts could be found.

Hype artist Ron Wyatt popularized it starting 1977 to raise money for himself. Wyatt also claimed to have found the site of the Red Sea crossing of the Exodus, complete with ancient Egyptian army artifacts.
