Every time I boot up my Windows 11, I'm greeted by MS Edge. I can't seem to shut it down for good. I searched the internet, followed all the advice, but it doesn't work.
I tried the following tips I found on the internet:
1. Press Windows + R to launch the Run application. Type “regedit” in the dialogue box and press Enter.
2. Once in the registry editor, navigate to the following file path: Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\NlaSvc\Parameters\Internet
3. Now, look at the right side of the screen where different keys are listed. Search through them until you find “EnableActiveProbing”. Double-click it to open its properties.
4. Set the currently set value to zero “0”. Press Ok to save changes and exit.
Okay, I did that. Edge still pops up.
I tried this:
Go to the following path: C:WindowsSystemApps. Find the folder named “Microsoft.MicrosoftEdge_8wekyb3d8bbwe”.
Right-click the folder and select “Rename.” Change the folder’s name to something like “Microsoft.MicrosoftEdge_8wekyb3d8bbwe_disabled.”
Renaming the folder tricks Windows into thinking Edge is gone. But remember, this won’t fully uninstall it, just disable it.
Okay, I did that. Edge still pops up.
I found that running CCleaner apparently shuts down Edge, because CC shuts down all web browsers when cleaning. But if I shut the laptop lid for a while, then open it ten or so minutes later, Edge greets me again.
Preventing it from startup works for me but the OP wants to totally remove it and prevent MS from reinstalling it during updates, which it will do.
My Startup Apps say that Edge is Disabled, yet it keeps popping up.
Why don’t you just use it? It is solid.
How about in Windows 10 please? Nothing off of You Tube or elsewhere works. Thanks in advance.
Are you running Windows 10. Did you do it this way? Type Control panel in the search box at the bottom of the screen .You’ll get a list. Click on Programs. Under Program Features click on Uninstall a program. See the list. Right click on Edge, the word change will come up, click on it. Then you get a choice box to uninstall. At least that’s what mine does.

I wish I could be of more help. I also have Chrome installed but I only use that for Dish on Demand. I can’t go further on the uninstall choice.

Linux has its headaches too.
Ubuntu constantly pesters me to upgrade this/that and its multiple times a day and you can’t stop it
I’ve read that there are dependencies that windows needs from edge or htings will go wonky if you manage to delete edge- there are ways- some programs will allow you to ‘debloat windows’ and get rid of edge totally- but they don’t recomend doign that- check out youtube and type in ‘debloat windows 10’ or whatever version- lots of videos on it- they show how to shut it down too-
Put it in a bag of dry rice for two weeks.
?? I never get bothered about updating- linux mint cinnamon flavor- i do have the update manager set to auto for everythign but major version updates- you can set that in the options so it won’t bother you abotu updates=-
Ask Grok and tell it that it’s Windows 11. It gave me a lengthy answer that looked sane enough to try.
It’s the first thing I see on Win 11, but sometimes they have pretty backgrounds so I’ve never tried to disable it. Close is good enough for me.
But you should be able to tweak the startup menu.
Also, when I was a kid, before Microsoft got so smart, I used to stash programs in other folders so they couldn’t be accessed, and disable programs in Task Manager. Not sure that’s still effective.
Think about getting an older laptop. Win 11 is not “all that.”
i wonder though if you delete it, if the files that rely on it won’t work anymore?
That used to be me. Makes me laugh. Our MS windows dominated computers would go down at many critical times.
I believe the best way going forward would be to get a stable(non MS) Linux distro. Make it your own and never have to pay MS another penny. I understand that MS owns Azure Linux.
The only way I got it to stop on my larger desktop was to take it to a computer guy who put a new copy of WIN 11 on it and made some other adjustments.
My smaller laptop has the same problem and Microsoft bombards you all the time with their crap.
Drives me nuts.
The Clintoon Admin. thought it had squelched the Microsoft monopoly. They were wrong.
I had uninstalled mine but left the folders.
THEN, I took the permissions of the folders away from system and marked the folders as READ ONLY.
Windows was then not able to do ANYTHING with the empty folders, and wasn’t able to reinstall EDGE.
I use Windows 11. Its Control Panel will not let me Uninstall Edge.
