What a trip down memory lane. I’m seeing a lot of names I know here. Some were friends. I worked in the music industry for a while, stoking the star-maker machinery behind the popular song.
Performer I most wish I could see again, one more time: David Bowie
Earworm song I most wish I could get out of my head: Daft Punk, “One More Time”
Performers I still go out of my way to see again, every time I get the chance: Joe Jackson, “Weird Al” Yankovic
Performer I’d think about seeing again, with some misgivings: Elvis Costello. He writes great songs, but on a personal level, he’s kind of a dick.
Performer I most enjoyed hanging out backstage with: Alice Cooper. Contrary to expectations, he’s a genuine Christian and has been clean and sober for more than 40 years. Brilliant guy, actually.
Concert I most wish I could see again: Pink Floyd on the “Wish You Were Here” tour. Mostly because I went to it with my then girlfriend and eventual wife, who died from cancer a few years ago. Hearing “Wish You Were Here” still brings me to tears.
Concert I wish I could forget: Gordon Lightfoot, who was so drunk he was practically falling off the stage and couldn’t remember the lyrics to his own songs.
Band it was most fun to get stuck in a motel with during a 3-day blizzard while on tour: .38 Special. Great bunch of guys. Great musicians, all of them.
Way too many to remember.
The first was Ozark Mountain Daredevils
in 1976.
The most recent was psych folk band The Stevenson Ranch Davidians a few months ago. They are fantastic.
Bands Ive seen multiple times include Pere Ubu, the Mekons, X, Lambchop.
Original lineup of the chilli peppers? With Slovak?
Early. I had their first album on vinyl. True Men Don’t Kill Coyotes, Green Heaven, etc.
Camper Van Beethoven? Take the skinheads bowling? Nice.
And 10,000 maniacs? Natalie Merchant had such a beautiful voice. Loved her and Kate Bush and the lead singer for The Sundays.
Husker Du, another great band from my youth, as well as Bob Mould’s solo work.
X? Nice.
Some interesting lists in this thread.
I saw a good mix of acts in 60s and 70s - yardbirds, byrds, dead, airplane, janis, hendrix, chicago TA, santana, iron butterfly, pink floyd, paul revere, elp, yes, focus, jeff beck.

I was going to mention my hearing loss too. My ears rang for days after. I saw them 4 times altogether. The last was a couple of years later at a somewhat larger venue and the energy level just wasn’t the same as that small club venue. They were designed for that packed small club experience. Other groups did much better in larger venues from what I could tell. I saw the Clash at a stadium sized show and they were great.
I went to a Santana concert when I was 17 in St. Louis. Side seats about 50 feet from the stage and up about 10 feet from the stage. About 30 minutes in, the stadium was filled with, ahem, “smoke”. Then some ladies decided it was getting too hot in the stadium and the only way to cool off was to remove their clothes. Music was good, but the show was outstanding.
“Flying Burrito Brothers
New Riders of the Purple Sage”
Great favorites of we New York suburban urchins.
Roger McGuinn such a great
Back then it wasn't nearly as expensive. I remember Journey tickets being expensive at $14 because everyone else was $10 - $11. They also rarely (if ever) had tiered pricing for different seats.
Why Mr. Clay that is quite the list
Phish (68 times)
I’m not really into electronic music, but Daft Punk’s live album from like 2007 is amazing even though I prefer live music.
Wish I’d seen Bowie. Also Gun’s and Roses, Pink Floyd, Tool, Metallica, off the top of my head.
Joe Jackson was underrated. Saw him in Hartford, CT. Really good. Was traveling with an orchestra at the time.
😱
lol. Yeah. The Ramones were made for the small, crowded, sweaty club.
I left one concert with a footprint on the back of my shirt with no idea how it got there.
Ok last one.
