The Census Bureau American Community Survey (ACS), tracks language use but doesn’t directly isolate “Spanish-only, no English” speakers in a single statistic. 42 million people speak Spanish at home. Of those, 16.4 million reported speaking English “less than very well.” This category includes people with limited English proficiency. The best guess is 10 million people can speak NO English.
That is THREE PERCENT of the population. Why the HELL do we have to listen to "Press 2 for Spanish" when so few people need it? It's like catering to the 0.001% of people who are mentally ill and think they are the opposite sex.
So how much time does the country waste listening to unneeded "Press 2 for Spanish" messages?
Grok estimates there are 100 million to 200 million outgoing calls from individual consumers to businesses placed every day in the USA. Assume:
▶︎ 200 million outgoing calls from people to businesses every day
▶︎ 30% of business calls make you listen to "Press 2 for Spanish"
▶︎ 97% of the population does not need that (see above)
▶︎ the announcement lasts 3 seconds
If my math is right, the country is wasting 50,000 man-hours every single day listening to "Press 2 for Spanish"! That is the equivalent of 25 full time people in the USA doing nothing but listening to that crap!
Maybe DOGE could hire those 25 people to do nothing but listen to "Press 2 for Spanish" all day long and they could stop making us listen to it.
undelay, undelay.
Or Bangladeshie or Philippine or ....
I’ll wait until it is a done deal before celebrating.
One thing I would like to see an end to is multi-language ballot. It is part of citizenship requirement that you could not only speak English but be able to read and write in English.
If you can not read and write in English you should be allowed to vote.
Finally!
All this crap where every US government office does things in multiple languages is a waste of US tax payer money.
The established and traditional language of this nation is English.
If you want to live here, learn it.
“President Trump is planning to sign an executive order that would for the first time make English the official language of the U.S., according to White House officials.”
Does this mean that we will no longer have to “Press 1 for English” when calling customer service? I won’t hold my breath on that. Also won’t be expecting US companies to suddenly hire American customer service “agents”, instead of farming it out to “lower wages” countries. IMO, those big companies (Amazon, Walmart, AT&T, etc.) should have to pay a fee if they choose to hire non-Americans preferentially. Enough of this ‘America last’ BS.
“many of them speak English and not the native language...”
Not in my Walmart they don’t.
Heck yes!!!
WuzzaZeeper?
I had to read that twice. Not the BEE
Can anyone here define English? Is he going to define “English” to distinguish it from whatever that is they speak in England, Ireland, Scotland, Australia and so on ad nauseaum?
Are we going to have to change the US Constitution which mentions “Habeas Corpus” and “ex post facto”? What about all the other legal terms plus the scientific ones?
Will Los Angeles and San Francisco have to change their names?
Will Notre Dame University have to change its name?
“ Basically symbolic, but it sends the right message.”
Not at all. I am done with being treated as racist for not pronouncing last names with different sounds, as if my language is on its way out
That too
Refugee kids from Europe after WWII had to learn in English in the public schools
They did fine
Private companies can do as they want. This won’t affect them at all.
Surprising is the fact that the CA state constitution contains a clause that makes English the official language of the State.
“”””What language is the US Constitution written, of course english.””””
The ancient lost language of cursive, like mom and dad’s letters and grocery lists?
Yup.
What about speaking Jive?
“Private companies can do as they want. This won’t affect them at all.”
I know. Doesn’t mean I agree with the things private companies do.
Why not take the opportunity to rename it “American”, like the gulf?
