Words you see a lot on Gene Hackman’s extensive film resume: Lieutenant, Sergeant, Detective, Sheriff.
The movie star, who was found dead Wednesday at age 95 at home in New Mexico, was famous for playing admirals, generals, multiple (fictitious) presidents, coaches, a reverend, a senator and myriad other upright authority figures over his five-decade career in Hollywood.
But his portrayals, like his life, were full of fascinating contradictions. Popeye Doyle wasn’t just another detective, and Gene Hackman was not just another actor. Hackman was born in San Bernardino, California, in 1930 and eventually settled with his grandmother in Danville, Illinois.

Completely disagree. I loved the comics and Hackman as Luthor. He gave the character a personality, something he never had in the comics. What’s wrong with a megalomaniac who has a dry sense of humor?
“Otisburg? OTISBURG?!?!”
We can hope!
**I loved him in Superman!**
Good but I had a problem with it. Comic book Lex Luther was bald as I remember.
**He played a conservative Christian Senator in The Birdcage.**
REPUBLICAN senator. A cheap shot Hollywood is good for.
It was always exciting how he could take over a scene and it would explode. Grabbing the balls in Mississippi Burning. Crashing the bar in French Connection.

Hackman didn’t want to shave his hair for the role, so he portrayed Luthor wearing wigs to cover up his baldness.
Night Moves was a really below average movie but he made it worth watching.
And those chuckleheads didn't even realize it.
Though I wonder if Hackman did. I love his performance and the movie
It's one of the rare sequels I prefer to the original. And Hackman is a big reason why.
Here’s a good question. Would he have been a better Harry Callahan than Eastwood?
“Would he have been a better Harry Callahan than Eastwood?”
No!
...paean...
Buck Barrow.
He was going to make espresso.
First, changing him from being essentially a mad scientist to a businessman type is just wrong. Second, while he hated being bald, he never covered it up with a wig. Third, he was never a dandy. Fourth, while he was crazy implausible, he wasn’t 1966 Batman crazy implausible.
Sinking California to make money off of Nevada real estate is too small a fish for a super genius like Luthor.
Buck Barrow. That scene with him dying and Estelle Parsons crying was classic.
My favorite of his roles...
A real hidden gem of a movie was The Package with Tommy Lee Jones.
Yes, he stole the show. Young Frankenstein.
I don’t know what the single most riveting film performances ever was. But that has to be included in any debate. IMO
