The article said one of the surviving dogs was roaming the property. I am assuming the dog in the kennel starved to death. The dog roaming inside the house and the dog roaming outside found something to eat.
“Gas leak?”
My guess, and the Dog maybe just starved / dehydration assuming the kennel was outside.
He was found in the mudroom, which suggests he was near a dwelling exit door.
I was thinking about this. The “in memoriam” portion always honors those who died during the previous year but whenever someone dies really close to the telecast date, it always puts the academy in the awkward position of once again needing to explain this.
In the case of Hackman, he was such a monumental figure in Hollywood, they might just squeeze him in, putting the academy in another awkward position of why they included Hackman while saving Michelle Trachtenberg, who died the previous day, for next year’s segment.
Mudroom?
I don’t have experience on residential but I was involved with a number of AC upgrades in Santa Fe. Typical scenario was older building was built without ac, may even have real adobe walls in some cases. At some point a new owner decides he has to have AC. No pathway for central air ducts but you can run refrigerant and power lines and hide them through various means. This leads to a VVF system with one large compressor outside and a bunch of cassette style fan units inside, each with its own refrigerant feed. Fantastically efficient but the system is charged with a great deal of refrigerant. Commercially you will almost always have leak detectors on a system like that but residential it would be a crap shoot.
From the description, the mudroom where Hackman was found was near the kitchen. His sunglasses were found nearby. Sounds like he was either coming or going--maybe letting the dogs out.
The dog had its own bedroom?
