A mudroom is a smallish vestibule at a secondary entrance to a home where you kick off your dirty, muddy shoes and leave your wet rain gear. Some mudrooms also hold the washer and dryer.
From the description, the mudroom where Hackman was found was near the kitchen. His sunglasses were found nearby. Sounds like he was either coming or going--maybe letting the dogs out.
