I hate French food. Grossly overwrought, overrated crap. Come to think of it, I can't stand the French either!

Italian and Greek food for me along with Cajun and Southern Barbeque.

My mother lived right near the Italian market in South Philly and they never had to lock their doors and used to sleep on the roof during summer.

My parents took me every month to the Italian market at 9th and Christian Streets to do our shopping for "Good Stuff".

They bought a pasta maker, hand cranked, in 1968. Last year I couldn't find the handle, so I called the store. Still there. Still in business. I had a new handle the next day, no charge, overnight shipped.

Come to think of it, I can't stand the French either!

One time I was staying in a pensione in Southern Italy, don't ask me where, maybe around the outskirts of Salerno that time; and the owner started chatting with me, despite my limited Italian language skills. As the conversation moved along into what kinds of foods he liked and which would I like, he aske me,

"A te piace i francese?" to which I shrugged non-committedly.

He grinned wickedly and said, "Sono brutti!"

Obviously, I'm still chuckling about it decades later.

Years ago, some thuglets robbed a small Italian deli here in the bad part of town.

The cops knew who they were and were looking for them. They found them in a field south of town, hanging from their toes.

Yeah, Italians are very, very proud of their food. I went to a pizza-making party up in the hills here with a group of Sicilian friends. While conversing with one of them, he said, "Sicilian food is the best in the world!," to which I responded, "What countries have you visited?" Silence.

Yes, Italian food is great, but I've traveled around and also enjoyed Greek, Turkish, Lebanese and Iraqi food, all of which was great. Chinese? Great. Mexican? Great! But say that to most Sicilians and they'll look at you like you have three eyes. Lol!

I will say this though: Sicilian pastries, and Sicilian desserts in general, are the best I've ever had in the world. Same for their pizza.

It’s still like that here in Sicily. No one messes with women and children. Come to think of it, for the most part, no one messes with anyone here. Safe, quiet and almost no street crime at all.

And to be clear, although the conversation may have started with the food, he moved it onto the people themselves -- I francesi. Whom, I am forced to admit, even though I didn't show my hand to him until he revealed his opinion, cannot compare to the magnificent italiani.
