There is no advanced placement Gym class. A 4.4 GPA would seem to indicate that he aced every class: those that topped out at a 'standard-A' (4.0) and those that scored an 'advanced-A' (5.0).
Where a lot of colleges weed-out these academic achievers is the public-service and outside-activities. Kids that grind on the school work to the exclusion of all else can be hurting their assessment.

My son took (and tutored and taught) many AP classes in high school. He finished with a 4.33 GPA. His girlfriend, the class valedictorian, had a 4.86 GPA. My son wrote the valedictorian speech for her. She headed off to Georgetown to get a degree in math. My son headed to USMC bootcamp. He has degrees in Business Administration and Physics now. He makes a good living as a real estate broker, but spends his free time studying nuclear physics.
