Microsoft’s Majorana 1 chip carves new path for quantum computing

Microsoft introduced Majorana 1, the world’s first quantum chip powered by a new Topological Core architecture that it expects will realize quantum computers capable of solving meaningful, industrial-scale problems in years, not decades. It leverages the world’s first topoconductor, a breakthrough type of material which can observe and control Majorana particles to produce more reliable and scalable qubits, which are the building blocks for quantum computers.

...topoconductors and the new type of chip they enable offer a path to developing quantum systems that can scale to a million qubits and are capable of tackling the most complex industrial and societal problems

“‘Let’s invent the transistor for the quantum age. What properties does it need to have?’” said Chetan Nayak, Microsoft technical fellow. “...it’s the particular combination, the quality and the important details in our new materials stack that have enabled a new kind of qubit and ultimately our entire architecture.”

This new architecture used to develop the Majorana 1 processor offers a clear path to fit a million qubits on a single chip that can fit in the palm of one’s hand. This is a needed threshold for quantum computers to deliver transformative, real-world solutions – such as breaking down microplastics into harmless byproducts or inventing self-healing materials for construction, manufacturing or healthcare. All the world’s current computers operating together can’t do what a one-million-qubit quantum computer will be able to do.

The topoconductor, or topological superconductor, is a special category of material that can create an entirely new state of matter – not a solid, liquid or gas but a topological state. This is harnessed to produce a more stable qubit that is fast, small and can be digitally controlled, without the tradeoffs required by current alternatives.

This sounds important, but I don't have the intellectual heft to figure out if this is true, if it is promising, or if it can be reduced to economical commercial practice.

But this is quite the bold statement: All the world’s current computers operating together can’t do what a one-million-qubit quantum computer will be able to do.

Of course, they don't mention the nefarious uses that Bill Gates could put topoconductors to.

Bill Gates is no longer at Microsoft.

Quantum computers orders of magnitude faster than and can solve problems beyond capability of conventional ones.

When I saw Majorana” I thought it said “Marijuana”.

“Bill Gates is no longer at Microsoft.”

Duh. Everybody knows that. But you think he doesn’t have influence on the company, have friends there, and can capitalize on their breakthroughs?

Just think how much faster that blue screen will come up with quantum computing!

I want that Marijuana 1 chip in my computer. My computer is a little flighty at times and gets ahead of itself causing errors. I need something to calm it down and just do its job.

I heard this one added 2+2 a trillion times in one second and got 4 most of the time.

Supposedly qbits can take on multiple states (values) at the same time and you don’t know what state (value) it is in until you read it.

So how do you store a “1” in it and then be 100% confident that you can read it back if the values in it change according to some probability function?

I did it in my head just once and got the answer exactly right in under one second. Not to pat myself on the back or anything.

Quantum computers use new and radically different methods of computation to address problems that cannot be calculated quickly and efficiently by conventional computers.

The computers that we use today are based on microscopically small transistors set to one or zero as they process problems. Quantum computers instead use the indeterminate nature of matter at the quantum level as either waves or particles to compute problems using new programming algorithms and techniques.

Dig a little deeper into how quantum computers work and one falls into the perplexing world of quantum mechanics, which can be described but not fully understood. As physicist Richard Feynman said, "I think I can safely say that nobody understands quantum mechanics." The equations of quantum mechanics work to a high degree of precision but do not yield a satisfactory overall understanding of physical reality.

The development of quantum computing chips by Microsoft and others though is expected to lead to new insights and advances into materials and other fields. New products and services will become possible. Quantum chips will also help spur artificial intelligence.
