“Musk also said in a separate post that “the social security database is not de-duplicated, meaning you can have the same SSN [Social Security number] many times over, which further enables MASSIVE FRAUD!!”“

WTF is de-duplicated!!!??? Any list generated by any computer automatically will indicate duplication. Politicians are evil scum and this is just another of their skims. De-duplicated my ass!!

WTF is de-duplicated!!!???

Data is "chunked" and "hashed"...made into smaller, uniform bits (chunked) and each bit is given a unique identifier (hashed). Each hash is compared to a file holding data already created or backed up and duplicate hashes are not backed up or transferred and are discarded but are kept at the source.

It's a storage space saving encryption algorithm widely used in big data scenarios. Almost all Medium to Large companies use it.

I have to ask some of the math wizzes here- how many numerical combinations of SS numbers can there be? Has our population exceeded all available combinations?

De-Duplication is an IT phrase. It means reviewing saved data so files only have one source stored or in the system so all references to it go to that one file, rather than multiple copies or instances.

I like that the concept is being applied to Social Security. Imagine using the same social # for hundreds if not thousands of payments.

Somebody had to approve the first fraudulent use of someone else’s social # to get an instance into the system. That’s the big news on this. It indicates management failure or outright fraud!

A good database design doesn’t use smart numbers for keys. The duplication would be checked via a process while adding new ones, etc. and the ssn will be duplicated for payments to and from.

I finally figured it out.
The fed have systems that are so old they don’t have the features that even 20 year old operating systems have.
And each agency has there own old outdated system.
They cannot talk to each other.
THIS is how the whole house of cards stays afloat.

At least, this is how it’s done here in Michigan.
