BMI is not worthless, it’s a general screening tool. Its purpose is to tip you off that something needs to be looked at further, nobody uses it as the end all determiner of health. It’s used to indicate that somebody might need to look at a body fat measurement like a DEXA scan to see what their body comp really is. If you’re muscular and low body fat it’ll show that. The problem is that everybody wants to claim that they’re a weightlifter and therefore BMI is worthless. The reality is most of the time they’re FOS and they’re just fat, but they don’t want to hear it so they blame it on BMI being flawed.

Also, people should know that heritage matters in bmi. Asian healthy bmi is 18.5-22.5.

For those who aren’t interested in being encouraged by a bmi calculator to eat better and exercise more, don’t heed it. It’s still a valuable tool for physicians to try to help patients.
