No, Gregg Rolie (keyboards) was the lead vocalist in the beginning. Journey started out as basically Santana without Carlos Santana. (Think of the song “Black Magic Woman” and you’ll hear Gregg Rolie singing.)
Gregg Rolie went to Cubberley High School in Palo Alto (class of ‘65), and when the school closed down in the late 70s Journey played pro bono at their final graduation night party. Yes, all of us who attended the nearby schools were green with envy.
As an aside, Cubberley was also the scene of a fairly well-known psychological experiment: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Third_Wave_(experiment).
Here’s a track from the second Journey album with Gregg on vocals and keys. This song was accused of stealing the riff from “Carry on my Wayward Son” by Kansas. There are some similarities, but at this point, who cares? I think it was proven that Journey recorded their track first. Anyway, this one goes pretty hard, and features solos on keys and guitar.
