'America First' has worrying echoes of Hitler's 'Germany above all' - Lavrov

The United States' 'America First' policy has disturbing similarities to the slogan 'Germany above all' used by the Nazis to assert national superiority over others, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has warned.

In an op-ed for the magazine 'Russia in Global Affairs' published on Tuesday, Lavrov argued that Washington's approach undermines the UN Charter and the post-war global order built on sovereign equality. He noted that this principle was enshrined in the Yalta-Potsdam agreements signed in 1945 by the USSR, US, and UK, shaping the modern international system.

With the administration of US President Donald Trump back in power, Washington's interpretation of international processes since World War II has taken on a new dimension, Lavrov claimed.

"'America First' is alarmingly similar to the Hitlerite slogan 'Germany above all,'" Lavrov said, adding that an approach based on "peace through strength" could be the final blow to diplomacy.

These types of statements and ideological constructs do not show "the slightest bit of respect" for Washington's international legal obligations under the UN Charter, he argued.

-snip-

"However, today is not 1991 or even 2017, when the incumbent US President took the helm for the first time," Lavrov wrote.

Citing Russian analysts, he argued that a return to the previous global order, which is still pursued by the US and its allies, is impossible, as demographic, economic, social, and geopolitical shifts have become irreversible. He expressed hope that the US will eventually accept a new role as one of several global powers rather than as hegemon.

Multipolarity is gaining momentum, Lavrov went on to say, suggesting that instead of opposing it, the US could in the foreseeable future become a "responsible" center of power along with Russia, China, and other countries in the Global South, East, North, and West.

From the Russian National Anthem, translated into English:

From the southern seas to the polar edge
Our forests and fields are spread out.
You are the only one in the world!
You are the only one - the native land so kept by God!

Gee, sounds a lot like "Gott Mit Uns", to me!

And it only got worse since the date he posted it. Ukraine had a democratically elected president at the time.

Lavrov wrote the op-ed. Not the muzzies. The rantings are his.

Are you arguing that Arab/Muslim/Islamic publications are not fiercely Leftist and not anti-America?

Don’t you know that Islam has one goal in mind: Worldwide Islamic Supremacy and individual national sovereignty including American national sovereignty stands in its way?

Russian invasion of Ukraine = German invasion of Sudetenland etc...

One of the great advantages of being a lefty politician is the luxury of saying stupid things to a frequently stupid majority.

Fascinating, as you explore new news providers ---

"We are incorporated in the United Arab Emirates. We also have offices in Sydney, Australia. Big News Network is a registered resource with the International Centre for the Registration of Serial Publications (ISSN), its registration number being 2616-6917."

As to the article the UEA mentions but did nto give a title, a search engine turns up Lavrov's article in English. It would have been so easy for the UAE's Big New Network to have referenced it by title or even a link, but no.

The paragraph which the UAE article mentions is:

"In 2025, with Donald Trump’s Republican administration back in power, Washington’s interpretation of international processes since World War II has taken on a new dimension, as vividly described to the Senate by new Secretary of State Marco Rubio on 15 January: not only is the postwar world order outdated, but it has been turned into a weapon against U.S. interests. In other words, not only the Yalta-Potsdam order is undesirable; so, too, is the ‘rules-based order’ that had seemed to embody the selfishness and arrogance of the U.S.-led West after the Cold War. 'America first' is alarmingly similar to the Hitlerite slogan 'Germany above all', and a wager on 'peace through strength' may be the final blow to diplomacy. Not to mention that such statements and ideological constructs show not even the slightest bit of respect for Washington’s international legal obligations under the UN Charter."

The UN Charter Should Become the Legal Foundation of a Multipolar World" Russia in Global Affairs, 04.02.2025

Dubai's Big New Network did not mention the opening and closing remarks, essentially about the UN as a potential avenue for negotitaions and diplomacy. But it is interesting that the Dubai article did not mention the above highlighted passage. It is an interesting notion, that an earlier "world order" -- whether an earlier assertion of Pax Americana which supposedly replaced Pax Britannica and as negotiated in Potsdam, GW Bush's "new world order," or the EU Commission's "rules-based order" -- might well be passing historical events. Certainly our $ 36.4+ trillion debt argues against continuing the borrowing spree, which is "a weapon against U.S. interests" in the long term.

Lavrov get's the notion from the 'Deutschlandlied' wrong, itself having been a steal from Hoffmann von Fallersleben in 1841, adapted in 1922 by the Kaiser's government, and after that by the Nazis in a twisted way. The original text was about principalities in what is now Germany forming that new nation from pieces. So Lavrov's take on "über alles" is historically uninformed. But so are many who think our nation's "world's policeman" role is sustainable. President Trump is correct, "America first." But the meaning is that our government must place this nation's needs above the needs of other nations, as the current administraiton's dealings in the last week with Mexico and Venzuela prove. Ditto in Panama. Not as policeman, but as a real "art of the deal."

Lavrov's article begins with "The UN Charter Should Become the Legal Foundation of a Multipolar World." I suspect that the Trump-Vance administration, as it sheds the idiocy of the Biden-Harris regime, sees a multipolar world as well. How those "multi" poles will align and function is a matter of that "art of the deal," and through diplomacy. So the whole seems like jockeying for position(s) as the creation of negotiations proceeds.

After all, the real and pragmatic choice seems to be something that will only be arrived at by a deal. And that by talking to each other. And the Biden-stirred "hot potato" mess in the war between non-NATO Ukraine and non-NATO Russia will have to be managed. Somehow. And probably not by Easter....

Both our United States and Russia seem to have time for negotiations, while the Zelensky government seems to have less time.

Brilliant! But not the first, given the success that Milei in Argentina is having. It would be lovely to see more government -- at the local level as well -- "reduce." No wonder President Trump ( and Milei and Bukele ) are peeving the "big government" types so bad.
