If I’m in an area that needs armed guards at a Wal-mart or movie theater it tells me I’m hanging out in the wrong area. Cops everywhere don’t make me feel safer, they’re an indication that I’m in a high crime area and I’ll go spend my money elsewhere. I’m too old to hang out in a ghetto.

There is a Walmart in Orlando that is like that. It serves a crime ridden neighborhood and had an incident several years ago in which a heroic, off duty city cop going into the store for her shopping recognized, challenged, and was killed by a murder fugitive who was also going into the store.
Astonishingly, my 93 year old mother sometimes insists on being taken to "the Walmart where the policewoman was killed" because they tend to have good prices and a wide selection of orchids.

I often went skating at a large rink in Chula Vista. One Friday night I showed up and the parking lot was full of cops. I paid for my session and stepped inside. It was wall to wall black kids. You couldn't move. I returned to the front office and asked for a refund. Nope. But I did get a rain check for another session. I asked one of the cops what was going on. The answer: "Mom's night". First Friday night of the month. The welfare moms get a "check" and drop the kids at the rink. Mental note to avoid first Friday nights.
I returned the following Friday night to a normal density of the regular denizens of the rink. We did have a regular contingent of 5 to 10 black guys who were very fine skaters. Always a pleasure to share the floor and skate with them.
