“Emilia Pérez” star Karla Sofía Gascón was exposed after sending offensive tweets in 2020.
The Oscar-nominated star of the Netflix musical is facing backlash after several offensive tweets made their rounds on social media since being uncovered by internet users. Writer Sarah Hagi put Gascón on blast by sharing the messages Jan. 30 on X in a post that garnered well over 3.1 million views as of Friday morning. The actor’s troubling quotes include Islamophobic references and commentary about George Floyd.
Gascón recently made history as the first openly transgender person to receive an Oscars nomination. A number of the offensive tweets have since been deleted after the actor was called out, but they were not completely scrubbed clean. Several media outlets managed to save the posts before they were torn down.
Several of the actor’s tweets were written in Spanish, including one that called Floyd “a martyr hero” just weeks after his death.
“I truly believe that very few people ever cared about George Floyd, a drug addict and a hustler, but his death has served to highlight once again that there are those who still consider Black people to be monkeys without rights and those who consider the police to be murderers. All wrong,” Gascón wrote to X, according to The Guardian.
Gascón went on to say, “is no longer a question of racism but social classes that feel threatened by each other.”
A post dating back to November 2020 showcased more highly questionable or offensive content from Gascón, including a note saying there were “more and more Muslims in Spain,” before adding, “Every time I go to pick up my daughter from school there are more women with their hair covered and their skirts down to their heels. Maybe next year instead of English we’ll have to teach Arabic.”
According to The Guardian, additional comments shared by the actor include, “until we ban religions that go against European values and violate human rights, such as Islam, under the protection of freedom of worship, we will not end part of the huge problem we face. Faith manipulates those who cling to faith.”
In a tweet from 2016, she also wrote, “Islam is becoming a hotbed for infection for humanity that urgently need to be cured.”
The powers-that-be at the Oscars may be disappointed by Gascón’s comment on the 2021 ceremony, when Nomadland took home the hardware for best picture.
“More and more the #Oscars are looking like a ceremony for independent and protest films, I didn’t know if I was watching an Afro-Korean festival, a Black Lives Matter demonstration or the 8M. Apart from that, an ugly, ugly gala,” the actor wrote.
Gascón has since issued a statement about the offensive comments.
“I want to acknowledge the conversation around my past social media posts that have caused hurt,” the actor said, according to The Guardian. (RELATED: Transgender Women Infiltrated The Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show BLOG)
“As someone in a marginalized community, I know this suffering all too well and I am deeply sorry to those I have caused pain. All my life I have fought for a better world. I believe light will always triumph over darkness.”
The left is in a pickle 🥒.
I actually read the entire excerpt. What did she say wrong? It all seemed factually correct to me.
Other than the last two sentences which were a disappointing capitulation to the Nazi Speech Police.
He.
What did she say wrong?
For Hollywood?
EVERYTHING!...............
Yes, I know. So, what did he say wrong about the Moops?
If Hollywood doesn’t like what you’re saying you must be right. :)
Emilia Pérez is a 2024 French musical crime film in Spanish language, written and directed by Jacques Audiard. Based on Audiard's opera libretto of the same name, itself based on the 2018 novel Écoute by Boris Razon, the film follows a Mexican cartel leader who enlists a lawyer to help her disappear so that she may transition into a woman.
I guess I didn’t get the memo. I am not in an uproar.
Department of Mixed Feelings...
They had to figure out a way to get the troon out of the running while still saving face.
The Oscar will go to 45-year Hollywood veteran Demi Moore for her role in The Substance, the only nominated film that anyone actually saw.
Denying Moore this award only to give it to some dude in a dress would've been too outrageous even for Hollywood.
