The Emergency Medical Treatment and Active Labor Act (EMTALA) requires hospital emergency departments that accept payments from Medicare to provide an appropriate medical screening examination (MSE) for anyone seeking treatment for a medical condition regardless of citizenship, legal status, or ability to pay. Participating hospitals may not transfer or discharge patients needing emergency treatment except with the informed consent.
Because of this law signed by Reagan ERs have been turned into GP offices. It is another reason hospital costs are going through the roof. What other country allows noncitizens and foreign nationals to get hospital treatment without proof of being able to pay? The law needs to be voided or amended to where it only applies to US citizens at a minimum.
