THE CORDON SANITAIRE HAS FALLEN: In Historic First, Anti-Migration Resolution Passes the German Bundestag with Support from Alternative für Deutschland

I don’t have the energy to write you a proper post, mainly because I spent all day watching debate in the German Bundestag. I cannot, however, let this moment pass in silence:

Just over an hour ago, an anti-migration resolution proposed by the centre-right CDU passed the Bundestag with the support of Alternative für Deutschland. The vote was 348 in favour and 345 against, with 10 abstentions.

The cordon sanitaire – on life support since Sunday – came down for the very first time. It was an epochal moment. Although the resolution itself is a non-binding measure, the centre-right CDU and CSU have achieved a parliamentary outcome with AfD votes, and that has never happened before. As Green Party Chancellor candidate Robert Habeck said in his speech today, “If you vote with the AfD on this very important issue, on what issue won’t you vote with the AfD?” That is the crux of the matter. This vote suggests that the Influx Limitation Act, up for a vote on Friday, will also pass the Bundestag (if not the Bundesrat), once again with a majority made by the AfD. If we are lucky the cordon sanitaire will come down not once, but twice in the same week.

After today’s vote, the left side of parliament broke out in jeering and booing; SPD representatives became particularly hysterical after their leader, Rolf Mützenich, lamented that the Union had “abandoned the political middle.” That is good. The left have become just a little less powerful, and the events set in motion this afternoon threaten to marginalise them ever further in the years to come.

There will of course be no coalition between the CDU and the populist opposition after this election. The present CDU leadership, including their Chancellor candidate Friedrich Merz, are committed enemies of the AfD, however happy they may be to cast themselves as anti-migration hardliners. It is even possible that the CDU throw their weight behind schemes to ban the AfD after the elections in an effort to put the toothpaste back in the tube....SNIP

It is the left that Germans should be worried about. Haven’t they learned from their history?

Odd title. I had to look “cordon sanitare” up. It seems they think they will get disease from the AfD, and not all the third-worlders they are bringing in.

By having a cordon sanitaire they mean to not negotiate or talk, treat them like pariahs.

It’s quite shocking to visit Berlin and see all of the Muslims’ there. The elite in Europe have lost their sanity. Muslims do not want to assimilate, and are quite hostile to the European culture, especially Christianity and historic Christian churches and cathedrals. The generation born after their parents settle read the unholy book, and find a religious basis for hostility to the natives of the land. Nothing good results from brining the wrong people into the West.

It has been the stated strategy of the AF D to become so popular that and other party will have no choice but to form a government with it.

It is not by accident that this has occurred, or is now more likely to occur, on the issue of immigration. It is my contention that across the globe, including America and many European countries, the single most animating issue favoring the right is immigration. That is obviously true in America where the issue contended with inflation to persuade the electorate in favor of Donald Trump. It might well be the issue in the United Kingdom that persuades the electorate on behalf of Nigel Farage.

So the CDU read the electorate and concluded what any self-interested politician would conclude, the party will not survive if it persists in tolerating uncontrolled immigration.

The question for the AFD now is, has it by moving the country closer to an actual solution of the immigration problem forfeited its most compelling issue? Will that confound AFD's stated policy to force itself into a coalition because of its popularity, most of which it is earned by its opposition to immigration?

However, the AFD has also significant economic policy prescriptions that, like immigration, are almost word for word the policy positions of MAGA in America but with one very significant and ominous difference: another stated position of AFD is to divorce itself from alliance with America and form close alliances, economic as well as geopolitical, with Russia and China.

So a potential coalition government including AFD will come they potentially mixed benefit that must be closely monitored.

This term (cordon sanitaire), I first noticed six weeks ago when some European journalist used it to describe events in Austria.

I’ll say three observations:

1. Covid (while ended now for 2 years)...whacked the ‘hell’ out of most European governments, and you can’t say they’ve fully recovered.

2. The public knows virtually every occasion that the system fails...the obvious answer is we need more EU-resolution/laws...to ultimately fix the cause. It’s like a comedy show when this chatter starts up via public TV.

3. As long as the right-wing stayed down around 5-to-10 percent....most governments grumbled but accepted it. I’d say in most cases...the right-wing element now pulls in a healthy 20-percent. The silly thing is that they don’t have thirty-odd political promises like the center or left parties. It’s usually two or three significant things.

Finally, I’ll just say it...in a private setting without journalists around...I’d say three out of four Europeans are frustrated over taxation, financial affairs, job security, migration, and public safety. But they won’t dare voice those ideas in a public setting.

Yes - and there is an irony in using a health-related term to defend the import of disease.

Unfortunately, three votes means zip,
Soros/Schwab can kill them almost before Hillary could.

Many studies have shown that children of Muslim immigrants are, in general, more radical than their parents. Below is a link to one such study. It’s out of the UK.

The European elite evidently think that time will take care of the problem. They are very wrong.

Thank you for the analysis.

You do not mention the Green Energy Scam, I notice. Does the AfD oppose the major parties on this issue? It stands to be compelling in Germany’s future. There will be a cold Winter, and a fuel-less Germany will not freeze quietly.

Another definition: a measure designed to prevent communication or the spread of undesirable influences.

The cordon sanitaire – on life support since Sunday – came down for the very first time.

To be precise, the so-called "Brandmauer" ("firewall") or "cordon sanitaire" as you call it pertains to other political parties refusing to vote in favor of any measure proposed by the AfD.

In the case at hand, the resolution was proposed by the CDU/CSU.

An important distinction!

(But yeah: The centrist parties and their precious "Brandmauer" are losing traction!)

The term "cordon sanitaire" has been in use in the military/political sense for more than a century.

If I remember correctly, French Prime Minister Georges Clemenceau first used it in the military/political sense just as WWI was coming to a close.
