eeeks.... and to think I completely missed Win8, Win9 and now Win10.
If my Win7 goes bonkers, I’ll have to revert to MS-DOS.

“If my Win7 goes bonkers, I’ll have to revert to MS-DOS.”
That is exactly what I thought nine years ago when I was faced with getting Win 10. I got Linux Mint and was blown away that it is almost exactly like using Win 7.
So don’t go backwards... Go forward and do yourself a huge favor. Believe me, you will never look back and never miss MS.

Microsoft marketing names went directly from 8.1 to 10. Reasons proposed include:
- MacOS was have success with "OS X"/"OS 10" i.e.10.x. MS always copies Apple.
- Somebody at MS thought 9 was an unlucky number.
- Back in the day, lots of 3rd-party software had to determine at runtime what version of Windows they were running in: 3.1, 3.11, 95, 96, 96SE... and a lot of vendors simply looked at the first digit, is it a '3' or a '9'? and so a new version of Windows called "9" would break a lot of legacy programs.
I believe that last one the most.
