Iron dome is not useful for ICBMs. And since we are not likely to be attacked except by ICBMs, it won’t be much use to us.
I agree. In a big war this won’t do much. Some missiles are just way to fast to catch. Multiple projectiles would also overwhelm things.

It is very easy to envision a drone and/or primitive missile attack originating from mexico or international waters.

A U.S. Iron Dome would likely be more of a space based Brilliant Pebbles type system that would destroy ICBM’s in the boost phase. Not the same as the Israeli Iron Dome.
I believe Trump just likes using the term “Iron Dome” because of the success of the system in Israel. But you can be sure the Joint Chiefs of Staff will inform the President on exactly the type of system we need.
