I guess we have to assume that the first mention of ‘Light’ in the Bible refers to something other than material light; and that ‘a day’ meant some measure of time or movement between points; not necessarily what we mean by ‘a day’.
I don’t believe the writers of Genesis were lazy or stupid; and many things that don’t make sense to us have to be symbolical.

Again and again, Marshall’s warnings to stay away from the Pylons fell on deaf ears…Will and Holly’s dad went bye-bye because of one they were all messing with I think, and then not too long after the time doorway spit out another man.
I remember The Land of the Lost episode where the dad, Will and Holly all walked through the time doorway within a Pylon and went home, only minutes later they all ended up back—as if they had just woke up in the raft. They had no recollection of ever being there.
