KC Chiefs NFL coach Andy Reid has origins in Los Angeles

For a sense of from where these Chiefs come, it’s instructive to have a glimpse at the origins of head coach Andy Reid, who grew up on what one friend called an “idyllic” street a mile from Hollywood Boulevard.

“The people there were there forever. Nobody left,” said Reid. “Kind of died off after a little bit, but nobody ever left.”

The oversized child, who has “a heart as big as he is,” former neighbor Reba Poor said, is the son of a radiologist mother and artistic father and an apt reflection of both his mother’s precision and seriousness and his father’s creative, whimsical way.

Growing up in a neighborhood from which they could see the lights of Dodger Stadium, young Andy embraced his studies and became as comfortable with carpentry and welding as writing. In fact, because of his love for legendary Los Angeles Times columnist Jim Murray, he for a time entertained a living as … a sportswriter.

“I was intrigued by it,” said Reid, who has kept journals for years and wrote a regular sports column for the newspaper in Provo when he was in graduate school at Brigham Young.

…Reid’s first job as a teen was at the Nicola Twins Market, where he handled anything from fetching pickles out of a barrel of brine to slicing bologna to lugging groceries to cars to helping cater gigs at local television shows, including The Tonight Show.

…Reid would regularly hang around his brother’s football games at John Marshall High, the school just blocks away that also produced the likes of Leonardo DiCaprio, Judge Lance Ito, Heidi Fleiss and Julie Newmar, better known as “Catwoman” to those of us who watched Batman back in the day.

Of course often times what happens with those seconds left on the clock are created by what happened earlier. Good coaching in the first half of the game can save you from having to do epic coaching at the end. Last night if McDermott is making better play calls on those “and 1s” that the QB sneaks KC had obviously cracked, heck at the very least FAKE a QB sneak and throw it to TE in the flat, the Bills probably hit that final 2 with a multiscore lead and they’re planning a trip to NO right now. And really while Steve’s last play blitz was pretty awesome, KC really didn’t do any more to win that game at then end than let the Bills fail.

Got it! Makes sense! Viewing press conferences, I also have a feeling Josh Allen is frustrated with the coaching even if he doesn’t say so publicly.

With 162 losses and a tie. The guy has been around a long time. And been a good coach through most of it. My primary complaint was in the Philly years when the press kept insisting he was a great coach when he was pretty obviously only pretty good. And none of that is his fault, you don’t control the press, or how lazy the New York based sports media was when it came to traveling. I think he’s a dramatically better coach in KC than he was in Philly. And he’s clearly learned a lot. The stuff that would make me roll my eyes when he was in Philly (”why do they insist this guy is so great? his team can’t even 2 minute drill” (SB loss)) is gone.

Understand I think he’s a great guy, and he’s on my list of people I’d love to sit down to have a beer with. But I do have a long memory and I have a hard time getting past those Philly years. It’s a me problem, I get it.

After last night’s game sure. He should be. But, they’re not likely to find a better coach on the market. I’ll switch sports to hockey. In the 2018-2019 season the Tampa Bay Lightning ran away with the best record in the league. Then they got to the playoffs and got WHIPPED in the first round by a highly mediocre Columbus Blue Jackets. A team they had beaten by a combined score of 17-3 in the regular season matchups, and then swept them right out of the playoffs. A lot of people were calling for Tampa’s coach Jon Cooper to get fired for how completely awful they were in that series. Tampa didn’t freakout. They stuck with their very good coach, won the next 2 Cups and got 2 games away from the 3pete.

And now we’ll see if Reid and KC can pull off the first 3pete in the Superbowl. Eagles are gonna be a tough matchup. Should be fun.

Nice puff piece. One misstatement. You can’t “see the lights from Dodger Stadium”...but you can see the lighted sky from the lights...
Marshall High was taking students from all economic strata. From the wealthy families of Los Feliz, to the lower income families of Elysian Valley {frog town). There was a diverse “racial” mix. White, asian, black, Hispanic. Marshall High was the 60s and 70s liberal dreamworld. About 70-80% of the students went to college. The collegiate gothic style of the school has been used in many TV shows and movies...from Mr. Novak to Nightmare on Elm Street and many other media projects. There were also other people who were famous...e.g. Mike Haynes...all pro/all world DB with Oakland Raiders...Dr David Ho one of chief investigators of HIV virus. All in all a good incubator for success in life.
One very notorious exception was Caryl.Chessman....whose execution for kidnapping ,rape, and robbery was an impetus for death penalty changes. FYI

Don’t know how contracts work but, I think Josh Allen would do well to start fresh on a new team.

Chasing the green grass is often a mistake. He’s probably not going to wind up a team with a better coach or a better roster. In the end his focus should be on controlling what he can control. He could have audibled out of one of those doomed sneaks. Maybe even just done a better job of executing, he didn’t seem to pause, all the good sneak QBs talk about the key being the pause. Take the snap, take a second for the gap to show up, then go.

And it just might not happen. Sports is cruel. Better QBs than him never got a ring. And right now the AFC is stacked with great QBs and great coaches. Admittedly the Bills are one of each. But there’s plenty of others. Including both Harbaughs, Mahomes, Burrow... It’s ugly on that side of the league. At least for the players, for fans it’s pretty awesome.

There’s a difference between being an objectively good coach, vs having one that clicks best with ALLEN, and who knows how to adjust the intricacies of the rest of the team to his presence as well.

Which they’re doing fine, except against KC in the playoffs. They’ve got one problem to fix. Or to get lucky on. In the 70s the Raiders had a major Steelers problem. They only got to the SB when somebody else beat the Steelers for them. Nobody panicked though, and they got a couple rings.
