YORK, Maine — The U.S. Geological Survey is reporting a magnitude 3.8 earthquake happened off the coast of southern Maine on Monday.
According to the USGS, the earthquake happened at 10:22 a.m. just over 6.2 miles (10 km) southeast of York Harbor. The depth of the earthquake was 8.2 miles (13.2 km).
Maine's Total Coverage has received reports from people across southern Maine who felt the ground shake or heard a loud rumble.
People in New Hampshire and Massachusetts also reported feeling the earthquake.
The USGS initially rated the earthquake as a magnitude 4.1, but the agency has since determined it was not that strong.

I happened to be sitting at the table and felt the vibration through my feet on the floor and the chair.
A lot probably depends on the ground underneath.
NH is a lot of granite so to me it would make sense that the vibrations would travel well.
But I’m a meteorologist, not a geologist.

Lemme see…in the past few months we’ve had floods, fires…and now an earthquake where rarely seen.
It’s just nature. I’m glad nobody and nothing was injured or damaged in New England.
However, if a swam of locusts appears on the horizon….

I’m in California and my home sits 1 mile from San Andreas fault.
I wouldn’t even notice a 3.8
If I had been doing anything but sitting at the table with both feet on the ground, I wouldn’t have noticed it either. It was very gentle and mild.
No. Didn’t feel a thing though it was felt around me.
I will say, it was uncommon enough (non-existent, really) up here that it made me sit up straight. It is odd to feel the ground shaking and hear all the items in my office making a rattling noise.
Granted, nothing like folks in California feel regularly (thank goodness) but still. It brings this to mind:

I’m on Cape Cod. I felt two distinct tremors, a few seconds apart.
I was in my study, over the garage. My wife, on the first floor, didn’t notice the quakes.

Maybe resonance?
The resonance was probably in my house framing in response to more impulsive earth tremors. That’s why I can sometimes feel big diesel equipment a few lots over.
The house is fairly modern (2004) and well-built, but it occasionally gets the subsonic shakes. Wind rarely does it, though.
