Hang on! The Rockaways? Isn’t that the East River?
Feel sorry for the guy, but as a buddy used to say, “if you’re gonna be dumb you gotta be tough”.
If this 54 year old man had children does he still get a Darwin award?
Playing the Palomino Club in North Hollywood in ‘79, swapping shows with Ricky Nelson. Crazy Texan singer wanted to surf, which neither of us had ever done. Found a board rental on the beach, they asked if we had dry suits, nope. They said water is 52 degrees. We said fine. I got hypothermia. Still occasionally get violent shivers if hit with cold wind suddenly.
Having surfed in the PNW, winter water temps are only a few degrees cooler than summer. I suspect the same for Long Island sound etc. But if you have a wet or dry suit, that should not be a problem.
Something else caused his death.
Aw c’mon, you can tell us!
I water skied a couple winters in Oklahoma on Lakes Skiatook and Ten Killer, middle of winter
JERRY: Swimming?
KRAMER: Floating, they weren't moving much. But they were out there.
My husband surfed Gilgo when we were in college but the discovered that the Hamptons was even better. Both of my sons surf…one on the west coast and one here on the east coast. They both surf during the winter. The younger one has surfed in Costa Rica, Hawaii, Australia and Fiji.
You win the thread!
You win the internet today! I actually spit my coffee reading that!
Who was the crazy Texas singer?
Lake Lewis did not warn appreciably when I was there for ROTC Summer Camp in 1975. It was probably no more than 60 degrees. Quite a few cadets had difficulty completing their tasks in water activities. If you’ve never been exposed to colder water, the initial shock can be difficult to overcome. After three springs at Fort Lewis, I was well prepared.
10 footers at the inlet, but it’s 53 in south Florida, and I’m not going out today!
We used to waterski at American Lake (Ft Lewis) Wa. year round, rain or shine. Yes to wet suits and dry suits.
LI and the New England coast warm up quite a bit in the summer. The Gulf Stream brings the warm water up. So even the Gulf of Maine/NH can warm up to 70 in August/September.
The west coast current comes down from Alaska. So even in Cabo San Lucas the Pacific is cold.
“ Strange time to surf 🏄♂️…”
My cousin surfs in Oceanside. He eats this up.
The water in Ogunquit, ME is freezing even in July. Heavy shrinkage.
I went to ROTC summer camp at Ft. Lewis in 1974.
