1. This was not combat.
2. The Sig Sauer M17, the standard military issue sidearm, has a manual safety. So did the previous M9 and M1911.
The driver is more than welcome to drive around without the safety on in the event he trained to draw without deactivating the safety as part of his Tueller Drill but, if his handgun had a safety, he could have set it before an inept cop tried to take his gun and negligently shot him in the leg.
The point is that when your safety is dependent on inept cops, you might want to have a manual safety. This driver, like many reviewing this shooting, are rethinking probable scenarios and whether or not their everyday carry should have a manual safety, even if they only use it when stopped by the police. Up until today, who would have thought they'd get shot by a cop trying to secure your own sidearm? This driver didn't.
You're already risking your life enough with armed cops around, why add your gun to the devices these cops can use to show you how poorly trained they are and how little they care about safety?
They want to be "stylish", "gender affirming", "politically correct", and other such nonsense. Your safety is far, far down their list of priorities.
You are stretching the scenario. The whole point of conceal carry is self defense, often close in. A safety always on is very likely to leave one with a firearm that does not fire when needed in a stressful emergency. My point on combat is leaving a safety on is deadly which you dismissed saying it was not combat, you make my point, having a safety in self defense situation can be deadly to the person carrying. It was not about a solider in combat, it was the need to be ready.
The more you have to think about setting up your firearm in an emergency the more likely it will be useless to you when you need it.
Again I see your argument as nothing more than make a gun idiot proof and no one can do that. An idiot will always find a way.
We can differ on this but blaming the event on the lack of a safety more than an incompitent cop is just wrong.
