Jan. 6 committee members talk to White House about pardons

Breaking news: With President-elect Donald Trump set to take office in less than a week, members of the Jan. 6 Select Committee and White House are privately discussing whether to issue presidential pardons to lawmakers who served on the panel, according to lawmakers and sides.

In an interview, Rep. Bennie Thompson (D-Miss.), who chaired the Jan. 6 committee, said he spoke to the White House counsel’s office last month about the issue. Thompson noted that he hadn’t talked directly with President Joe Biden on the topic, but the veteran Mississippi Democrat said he’d accept a pardon if offered.

“I believe Donald Trump when he says he’s going to inflict retribution on this,” Thompson said on Monday night. “I believe when he says my name and Liz Cheney and the others. I believe him.” Thompson and former Rep. Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.), the panel’s vice chair, were recently awarded the Presidential Citizens Medal by Biden.

As recently as last week, Biden said he’s considering preemptive pardons for high-profile Trump critics. However, the communication between the White House and some committee members on this topic hasn’t been previously reported. Members who served on the panel haven’t asked Biden for a pardon, though we’re told others have lobbied the White House to grant them.

Of course. They broke the law by destroying testimony. They used it in the furtherance of persecuting Americans. I think Trump should focus on the bigger issues, and let some bulldog take care of the pond scum.

These people are analogous to a WW2 concentration camp guard complaining about Simon Weisenthal tracking them down to face justice.

We can still put these people under oath and find out how they destroyed evidence. A pardon keeps you out of jail - NOT out from any accountability.

Investigate and charge if proven. Penalties should hurt.

Such illegal actions can not be excused under any circumstances for the good of the country, the rule of law, and the constitution.

Failure to do so encourages more of the same.

A pardon is NOT total protection for the scummy people involved..

We can still put these people under oath and find out how they destroyed evidence. Who was 'feeding them - and what they knew they didn't tell.

A pardon keeps you out of jail - NOT out from under any accountability.

Plus this begging to get a 'get out of jail' card tells us what they really think of what they did. It's not a surprise democrats put that idiot Liz Cheney on top as 'the face of the committee'... they knew where it was headed.

Pardon for what?

Don’t you need a crime first?

Not to mention, the can commit perjury during testimony....which is a new crime in itself.

Scumbags broke the law. Hope and pray the new administration does a full investigation even if they are pardoned. Necessary to show the American people the extent of their lawbreaking.

a pardon can keep them out of jail, but not a courtroom. revoke their pensions, open them up to civil lawsuits, and watch as they cry on maddow’s show.

Yes, they can be subpoenaed to determine the extent of the crimes and if there were any other conspirators, they may be safe from the past crimes but if the lie under oath they will be committing new crimes.

Or be charged with contempt of Congress. No one is above the law don’t you know. Love to see Liz Cheney spend a few months in jail like Bannon and Navarro.

They need to allocute, or specify what they are being pardoned for. otherwise, this kind of abuse becomes set as precedent.

Maybe we should still investigate and prove 2020 POTUS was stolen. Then try to nullify these pardons.

Sound far-fetched? Well, everything is far-fetched if nobody does anything.

I don't think there is any such thing as a "preemptive" pardon for these people. Either they did the crime, or they didn't. To stand up and say "I need a presidential pardon" means that you did something requiring it. I hope the incoming head of DOJ sees this for what it is, and prosecutes these people accordingly.

You can’t pardon someone unless they have been charged with a crime.

“ You can’t pardon someone unless they have been charged with a crime.”
Nixon was never charged with a crime.
I would love to see those J6 persecuting scumbutts locked up or even strung up. With Cheney 1st!

He might put Pam bondi on the case? They don’t need pardons, they need new court cases to prove their innocence, and prove that they were politically persecuted for their affiliation with pres Trump, and then they need to sue after they have been exonerated for having their lives destroyed by a tyranical power mad out of control liberal network!

He's been BEGGING for a pardon, he knows he broke laws.
