“The oil tanker Remy was living a double life. Bound for Malaysia in February 2023, it appeared to be a Panama-flagged ship carrying 1 million barrels of oil from Iraq, according to a document in its captain’s possession.
The document, a certificate of origin reviewed by Reuters from the Basra oil terminal in southern Iraq, showed the vessel had loaded crude from there on Feb. 22, 2023.
But the reality was very different.
Part of a sprawling oil smuggling network, the tanker was also going by the name Deep Ocean and was secretly carrying crude from a different country: Iran.
The captain had a second certificate of origin from the National Iranian Oil Company dated the same day.
Part of a fleet used by Iranian company Sahara Thunder, the Remy had pumped aboard the Iranian oil from another ship in Sahara Thunder’s network, the Iran-flagged Sonia 1.
The secret transfer, which ended on Feb. 22, was captured by the European Space Agency’s Sentinel-2 satellite.” (Excerpt)
