Congress must approve aid for California fire victims

Posted on 01/10/2025 6:43:57 AM PST by bill andersen

The devastating wildfires around Los Angeles have caused billions of dollars of damage and left thousands of people destitute and homeless. It is fitting and proper that congress and President Trump quickly enact legislation to help them. It will be very expensive with estimates ranging up to 200 billion dollars.

But the money has to come from somewhere. And there are a multitude of places to get it. And naturally congress will attach strings. Here is a starting list of the strings. It is by no means complete:

The senate will immediately approve all of President Trump’s cabinet nominations.

The Department of Education is immediately terminated.

All labor contracts and unions for federal employees are immediately terminated.

All restrictions to drilling on federal lands are immediately terminated.

All offshore restrictions to drilling are immediately terminated.

The Keystone Pipeline will continue unabated and be completed.

All 87,000 new irs agents are immediately terminated.

All hurricane and flood victims in the Southeast get the same aid and get it before the California fire victims get theirs.

FEMA, under the Trump Administration will solely handle the aid to there fire victims. No California state agencies will be involved.

Funding for the Corporation for Public Broadcasting and National Public Radio is immediately terminated and their broadcasting licenses are immediately revoked.

Cut off all funding for abortion, transgenderism, pride celebrations and promotions, etc.

Now THAT is a good suggestion.

This all sounds great with the exception of the part about bailing out California for their stupid and destructive liberal policies.

Why? The California state government just ordered the insurance companies to pay for it - even if they cancelled contracts last year.

It’s the communist way.

Does California still collect an income tax that is still partly funded by the rest of America since part of it is deducted from the federal taxes they pay?

Why should the rest of the country be on the hook to pay for this event? Many of these home are multi millions of dollars and many had little or no insurance. I make sure I have enough coverage to make me whole, and I pay through the nose for that coverage. Yet because fires take out homes that the owners didn’t also pay through the nose the rest of us have to pay? Sorry for their loss but Californians should cover these losses no matter how much it costs.

I am all for helping people in their time of need.

But, if I am funding what insurance should have covered—but did not because for the state regulations and the fact that this stuff burns every 10-15 years...then I am a hard pass.

The stupidity of the CA government is going to drive up the price of home construction for the next five years. Someone should be responsible for covering this.

And we should get compensation for the crap we are going to hear for the next couple of years from the entitled folks whining about what a pain in the ass rebuilding is going to be. (And not everyone there is ‘entitled.’ I understand that.)

If I were Trump I would demand that as a down payment for fire aid, CA must renounce sanctuary cities, submit to federal supervision of elections and defund DEI and illegal alien subsidies. That would be a good start.

people were being evicted out of their fema hotels this week, and now they demand we rebuild california in the neighborhoods of millionaires.

people had been threatened to have their kids taken from them because they had to live in a tent for the last 3 months.

I'm sorry you lost so much of LA, but if they do this they are spitting in the face of #WNC and Appalachia.

The insurance companies will win that battle.

Its amusing that people in general have no concept about how insurance works.

If I were the CEO of All State, I would have increased my security staff yesterday. These Californians are the “Free Luigi” crowd.

Trump should veto the bill unless California agrees to have all their votes counted by
10 pm on Election Day.

Aid to billionaires?

There should be an income limit to who gets it.

How does the federal government - drowning in debt, where most, if not all of its composite elements, aka federal agencies - couldn’t pass a financial audit - get the money to do this?

California’s mismanagement of its water resources and environmental infrastructure - is California’s problem.

“Give them the same thing the people of North Carolina got.”

Interesting idea. Hopefully the comparison will be publicized as help is doled out to California.

Also help to California should require promises that it will do things to prevent such major fire damage in the future.

Yes.

Or you can give them the money you sent Ukraine. Choose one.
