Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass faced mounting criticism Wednesday for her handling of deadly wildfires that continued to rage across the region, taking blame from influential city figures as she traveled back from a trip to Africa.
Patrick Soon-Shiong, the billionaire owner of the Los Angeles Times, slammed Bass in an X post claiming the mayor slashed the Los Angeles Fire Department’s budget, despite the high risk of wildfires in the region, and raised questions about reports that some fire hydrants in the Pacific Palisades had run dry.
“Fires in LA are sadly no surprise, yet the Mayor cut LA Fire Department’s budget by $23M,” he wrote in the tweet. “And reports of empty fire hydrants raise serious questions. Competence matters.”
A Bass spokesperson didn’t immediately respond to requests for comment on Soon-Shiong’s claim about the LAFD budget cut.
Bass’ decision to not return from Ghana sooner drew criticism Wednesday from even the left flank of political media.
“Inexplicable decision to not come back earlier,” Tommy Vietor, a former Obama staffer and Pod Save America host, wrote on X.
[Rick] Caruso, who owns a shopping complex in the Pacific Palisades that partially burned, compared Los Angeles to a “third-world country” with failing infrastructure.
“This is a window into a systemic problem of the city — not only of mismanagement, but our infrastructure is old,” Caruso told the Los Angeles Times.
The Los Angeles Department of Water and Power in a Wednesday press conference refuted claims including those made by Caruso, that water tanks in Pacific Palisades weren’t fully filled ahead of the fire.
Bass is still flying back to Los Angeles, and her spokespeople didn’t immediately respond to requests for comment about her current location.

The county and state devise schemes for saving water, but not for storing water by using methods that would store a whole lot of water.
The "schemes" are designed for DEI (acronym for politically correct) appearances. An example (analogy) of that:

Basically, there is an organizational chart for being politically correct, and at the top of the [pyramid] chart [scheme], is: DEI.
In actual function: the complexities of what happens - an illustration would show that the bottom of a pyramid - the vast, fat, running about (or not moving at all), scrambling (or sloth), plus a lot of waste (think: Chicago aldermania kickbacks), and BlueSky/CNN/Hollywood-celebrity appearances . . . all have to be "decided" (and scheduled) BEFORE productive(?) action (or more sloth).

My friend is involved in the storing of water for the greater Los Angeles region. "They" have ideas for dumping floating balls on outdoor reservoirs, in order to block the sunlight and reduce evaporation.
"They" have ideas for creating reservoirs alongside current and future paved roadways. "They" have a lot of ideas about, how to make all that look pretty (his specialty).
But instead of proceeding at a productive pace, the output is like the Obama 3.0's administration (Biden-Harris) that could barely produce more than 1 of the Electric Vehicle Charging Facilities . . . because:
DEI (the acronym for being politically correct)
In California, there is so much of:

in "having a conversation" and "engaging in dialog."
There is little time or effort made by DEI (the politically correct collective/collectivists) that would move toward an actual, practical goal.

I came up with an answer, years ago:
Using mining equipment. Approach the base area of a topical range/mountain, and at a slight down-angle, bore/drill as if going for the coal . . . but actually creating an out-of-the-sunlight water reservoir.
I wanted to use mining equipment, because I wanted to keep the people who know how to MAKE HARD STEEL employed - in order to maintain their talent:
They know how to make the really good, hard, steel. The stuff that will endure the task. The stuff that comes in handy, when our country needs the really, good, hard, steel.
Yet I also wanted to solve the water supply problem of California and other generally "dry' areas of the great southwest of our country.
But, as usual, one has to deal with DEI and the California (and other) eco-nuts, who "think:"
If the water goes into these underground reservoirs, then the water will not flow down "nature's streams!" Eeek!
In the leftwing mind, there is is a mechanical engineering problem:
An unwillingness to fathom (pun intended) that a volume can fill with water and then overflow . . . to the natural stream.
In order for the left wing to acknowledge the science, the left wing would (gasp!) surrender The Drought Panic and other panic methodolgy that the left needs to coerce votes.
To wit: "The Solution" must come from the DEI hive. "The Solution" that keeps up appearances.
