Donkey that inspired Eddie Murphy's character in Shrek dies at the age of 30 - as handlers mourn the passing of 'an icon'

The donkey that inspired Eddie Murphy's iconic character in Shrek has died at the age of 30.

Perry, a miniature donkey, had been a star attraction at Bol Park in Palo Alto - in northwestern California - for almost 30 years before he was sadly euthanised on Thursday.

The beloved barnyard animal had been suffering from laminitis - a painful hoof disease which caused excruciating pain. He also had a disorder in his left hind leg which made it hard for Perry to stand.

His handlers tried multiple methods to ease his pain before it became apparent his condition was not improving.

Jenny Kiratli, the donkey's handler, told Palo Alto Online that outside of his hometown Perry has an unlikely connection to one of Hollywood's most famous movie franchises - Shrek.

One of the animators reportedly lived near Bol Park and was told by his wife to go and observe the donkeys in their enclosure to help bring Eddie Murphy's character to life.

The same man then returned with a group of fellow animators who spent hours with Perry.

The Sun reported that Perry's influence on Donkey is clear with Ms Kiralti claiming the pair shared many of the same mannerisms.

Despite his apparent key role in creating one of the world's most famous animated characters, Perry reportedly received just $74 for the film - which also won the first ever Oscar for Best Animated Feature .

Ms Kiratli described his death as 'the end of the era' and 'the loss of an icon'.

She said: In Perry's last weeks, handlers spent many hours at the pasture with him, petting him, cradling him, singing to him, and telling him that he was and always will be loved.

There were many things I didn’t like about Shrek, including some gratuitous anti-Christian elements. But Eddie Murphy’s donkey was an irrepressible, exhuberent joy throughout the whole film. The entertainment value from Shrek and Donkey was 99% Donkey and 1% Shrek.

Easy mistake. A mule is a cross between a donkey and a horse. Mules are larger, stronger, more stubborn, hardier than donkeys, but less friendly and less tolerant.

The easiest way to tell a dolphin from a porpoise is that dolphins muzzles stick out like beaks.

Princess Fiona: But how will you kiss me?

Shrek: What? That wasn’t in the job description.

Donkey: Maybe it’s a perk.

Shrek is a totally obnoxious piece of political propaganda not worthy of the stage or screen

I never knew he was a real donkey

We Live in a Simulation. The evidence is everywhere. All you have to do is look.

😉

I'm never disappointed when I burro into the details.

Perry, a miniature donkey, had been a star attraction at Bol Park in Palo Alto - in northwestern California - for almost 30 years before he was sadly euthanised on Thursday.

There's ***always*** a Jewish angle:

Bol Park History

The donkey pasture was once part of a farm owned by the Bol family, who fled Europe as Hitler rose to power. Cornelius Bol, a Stanford professor and inventor of the mercury vapor lamp, and his wife, Josina, had six children. Six donkeys soon joined the family menagerie and lived out their lives on the Bols’ farm, savoring the attentions of generations of neighborhood children.

Perry (Pericles)
Born: 1994
Sex: Male
Type: Jerusalem miniature donkey
Nickname: The Celebrity
Claim to fame: The animation of ‘Donkey’ in the Shrek movies was modeled on our very own Perry.

More about Perry

Perry joined the Barron Park donkeys in 1997. He was originally brought to California to be a calming influence for polo ponies–but instead of calming them, he nipped at them! Thus, Perry needed a new home, and found one in Barron Park.

Perry is famous because he was the animation model for Donkey in the Shrek movies. In 1999, animators from Pacific Data Images, a local company contracted by Dreamworks for the 3D animation, visited the pasture and observed Perry, especially his movements and gait, to learn how donkeys move. Unfortunately, although Donkey was a hilarious and well-loved star in Shrek, Perry is not mentioned in the movie credits.

"Perry" [פרי] first appears in the Torah on the third day (3x as "fruit", verses 11-12).

A note about "Shrek" [שרק] -- the same letters spell sheker [שקר], "falsehood". Sheker is the subject of much commentary for its letters being out of order and on one side of the alef-bet, unlike emet, "truth".

The letters of sheker as "Shrek" [שרק] are in order, in reverse, and not in a place people might look (in the place of a donkey).

If the Sages of the Talmud needed a letter to symbolize truth, why didn’t they pick the א, the first letter of emet? Because the letter tav represents humankind’s ultimate destination, the culmination of our Divine service to perfect the world. And this truth will be unveiled in the final stages of the coming of Moshiach.

Additionally, the Talmud comments that the word sheker, or falsehood (the antithesis of emet), is written with the letters shin, kuf and reish: the last three letters in the aleph-bet before the tav. Emet, meanwhile, is spelled aleph, mem and tav: the first, middle, and last letter of the aleph-bet. The question is, why are the letters of emet so spread out in contrast to those of sheker? The Talmud concludes that the letters of sheker are close together because falsehood is common.

Truth, on the other hand, is very hard to find. This is depicted by the vast expanse between its letters.

The stubbornness of Mules is legendary.
Songs have probably been written about it.
Apparently, temperament can be passed on via DNA.
That’s how you get those hideous looking Bulldogs, who usually act very gently.

When the Shrek movies were a thing, my kids would tell their friends that one of their favorite bedtime stories was Balaam and the talking donkey in Numbers 22. It’s a Bible story that you don’t have to work hard to make it funny for kids to remember. It should be in every kids’ Bible story book.

Donkeys are very different from horses or mules. In the wild, female donkeys band together in a close “friendship” group, though males tend to be loners. Unlike horses, who lead hierarchical lives, female donkeys have a personality more like large, friendly dogs. They can get attached to their owners and try to follow them around.

Burros, “the national bird of Mexico”, are a small breed of donkey, descended from donkeys used by prospectors. The small town in northwest AZ, called Oatman, has more friendly burros than people. Very tourist friendly. They are not bashful at all about soliciting human food treats.
