One of our more knowledgeable members indicated that the flying standard is 4 crew with the 4th being a door gunner.

I’d guess a DG was not needed.

Or in this case what is called an observer. Gets flight pay used when NVGs are used.

You might be surprised to learn that the door gunner’s role involves a great deal more than the door, or the gun.

The door gunner is tasked with keeping the pilots advised on matters of vehicle separation in formation flight and close approach situations, among many other things.

(I have a Nephew in the role...)
