thanks for that...England’s colonization presence in India probably was the catalyst to learn English.

it became imperative to have a standard language.

It’s the dialects that kill them.

My last IT job had a bunch of Indian IT guys and gals.
It was explained to me that if it wasn’t for English, they couldn’t talk to each other because of the different dialects and some had a lack of Hindi knowledge.

What I had found earlier and your wiki cites seem to bear that out.

India may not like their English colonizers,, but they left them with something to talk about and a language to use to do it!
(In addition to stopping Mogul genocide and the Hindu practice of Suttee.)
