Well, technically, it’s loss of function, not gain, a supposedly weakened infectious agent. Which is exactly what traditional vaccines have delivered, dead or weakened viruses and bacteria.

Messing around with parasites now, that is a whole other kettle of fish. Parasites can be hard to kill, because they are more like us than bacteria are - what poisons them can poison us.
