I don't think that early humans needed to run from much since They were much more powerful than modern humans. The hair on a chimpanzee hides how truly powerful they are. Take a look at this picture of a hairless chimpanzee named Mongo.

All that muscle and not a gym in sight. That is just normal, chimp muscle mass.

Studies have determined that chimpanzee muscle exceeds human muscle in maximum dynamic force and power output by ∼1.35 times due to having a greater proportion of fast twitch muscle fibers than humans. Furthermore, the way great apes' muscles are attached to their bones by tendons, being further from the joint for greater mechanical leverage (at the cost of finer control) increases their strength as well.

An 80 pound chimp could easily destroy a 250 pound MMA fighter and then eat his face for spite.

Decades ago someone had a carnival attraction where they would muzzle a chimp or orangutan, put boxing gloves on it and pay anyone X$$$ to last a 3 minute round with the primate, No one ever did.

“That is just normal, chimp muscle mass.“

Which is actually much stronger than human muscle tissue pound for pound. Higher “twitch” or some such thing. Which means that a fairly stringy armed chimp could still throw a man around fairly easily. The one in the pic could yank off a man’s arm as an after thought.
