Can't move three feet without my Heeler by my side. 24/7/365, even a trip to the bathroom at 2:00AM. It's insane, but I adjusted. She won't eat the people food because that would violate her self assigned dog-laws. If it's put into her bowl and you stay in the kitchen, she will eat it. You could leave a roasted chicken on the floor and she won't touch it.
Back in the early 80's I had a Black Lab rescue that also complied with a dog-law code. Also, self declared. I think it's an alpha thing.
