With the Boston Celtics on pace to shatter the NBA's record for 3-pointers attempted by a team this season, and 3-pointers in general being up across the league, NBA Commissioner Adam Silver said Tuesday night that the league is studying the trend.
He also said criticisms of offenses becoming "cookie-cutter" and that teams are copying each other is something he thinks the league should take seriously.
"The answer is yes, [we are having] many discussions about the style of basketball [being played]," Silver told a small group of reporters Tuesday night before the championship game of the league's second annual NBA Cup between the Oklahoma City Thunder and Milwaukee Bucks. "I would not reduce it to a so-called three point shooting issue. I think we look more holistically at the skill level on the floor, the diversity of offense, the fan reception to the game, all of the above.

What is the issue?
Too many 3s. That's not basketball.
“What is the issue?”
Don’t know; unless the government of Red China doesn’t like it.
I wonder what would happen to baseball if every home run over 380 ft. counted as two runs. I suspect that baseball would, over time, become a home run derby, without any of the strategy that makes the game interesting today. That is what the three point shot has done to basketball.
Good point. The athletic contests are being engineered to keep fan interest and the bucks rolling in.
It is a worthless endeavour in the end. Ultimately, who really cares? I mean REALLY, REALLY, double-dare REALLY cares.
Except ratings are way down.
Widen the court by 3 feet each sideline and mover the 3-point line to 5 feet.
Maybe the NBA should enforce their rules on Traveling?
That’s what the TD did to football because teams crunched the numbers and saw that it worked out better if they aimed for the TD most of the time.
Increase the diameter of the official NBA basketball from ~9.5” to 10”, and simultaneously decrease the rim diameter from 18” to 15”. It would probably kill the game, both from the player’s and the fan’s viewpoints, but I would love to see them struggle with that.
I don’t watch or pay for any stinkin sportsball...... I guess three pointers are crowd pleasers. Same as triples and home runs.
So by all means, let’s alter the NBA rules to have more of them, for our Deep State bread n circuses.
Matter of fact, the NBA should make normal baskets, worth 3 points. And make 3 pointers, worth 5 points. Yowza!
How can anyone stand watching soccer, unless they are high, or lobotomized? Where ties are OK. Where scores are so rare. Ice hockey has low scores, but lots of skating action that I respect.
I saw lacrosse youth leagues at my local park. I rate it much higher than soccer. And better exercise for the boys and girls. Soccer is that stupid sport that denies use of your hands. And has youths doing headers to get CTE. Some youth leagues eliminated headers.
And raise the baskets up by a foot (men’s game). Dunks have become too common.
Yeessss! Traveling and palming the ball.
“Yeessss! Traveling and palming the ball.”
All this changes when the refs decide to actually call infractions.
So what?
It’s all a math problem.
If a 3 pointer has a 35% chance of going in, will it produce more points per game than a lesser amount of 2 pointers at 85%?
Moneyball.
EC
We need to make three pointers made by white folks to count as four points.
That would be “equity”.
Lol.
