I think that’s unfair to say that to Mairdie. Some of us like to hunt, but some do not.
Hunting to get rid of a dangerous bear or to put food on the table or to keep your garden from being destroyed is generally believed to be a good thing. Of course, a hungry bear with cubs can destroy your apple trees and endanger your dog that is trying to protect you and your family. And shooting that copper head or rabid raccoon will protect your family. Shooting a treed bear - that’s pretty lame.
It’s all a matter of trade-offs but it’s not a matter of intellect. Mairdie is a long time Freeper who is very smart.
Wildlife popoulations have to be controlled, and bears have no natural predators.
The Department of Conservation doesn’t just let peope kill as many bears as they want. They compute how many bears there are and how many the habitat can support, and regulate hunting seasons/harvests accordingly.
Same thing with deer. When deer get overpopulated they are susceptible to diseases like chronic wasting disease that can wipe out entire herds.
Hunters were the original conservationists, and hunters supply the lion’s share of wildlife conservation funding.
Mairdie pays people to kill cattle/pigs/chickens when she buys meat at the grocery store, and that’s way less of a “fair fight” than shooting a bear in a tree out in the wild where it lived free until the very end.
