I think the drones might have some kind of jamming technology. Maybe for different signal bands. That could account for the loss of control, but don’t see how it would drain a battery in only a few minutes.

one assumes that is true, why? another option is the battery only had 5 minutes left on it.

If the man’s drone had a cell phone or wifi connection for data, it may have raised its transmitter power to try to punch through any jamming. I doubt that would be much power compared to what is needed to fly, but it may have caused some increase in battery drain.
