Luigi Mangione allegedly considered bombing Manhattan as he planned out his attack on UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson.
Mangione, 26, appeared in court on Tuesday, fighting against extradition to New York - where he is charged with second-degree murder after Thompson, 50, was slain.
The former Ivy League student had been apprehended at a McDonald's in Altoona, Pennsylvania on Monday, when he was found with a 3D-printed pistol and black silencer, as well as a manifesto condemning the American healthcare system.
Mangione also had a spiral notebook in which he wrote a 'to-do list,' ahead of the grizzly shooting, CNN reported.
In it, he allegedly toyed with the idea of using a bomb to kill Thompson - but he decided against the prospect because it 'could kill innocents,' and determined a shooting would be more targeted.
He also reportedly mused that it couldn't get any better than 'to kill the CEO at his own bean-counting conference,' as Thompson was set to disclose the financial gains the company made this year.
Journalist Shimon Prokupecz reported that 'law enforcement and certainly investigators' will view that sentence as a 'confession.'

How is he only charged with second degree murder, I thought pre planning and laying in wait were those nagging little telltale signs of first degree murder? Could we be seeing a sign of preferential treatment to someone rich, liberal and from a powerful liberal family?........Nah!, what am I thinking!

Evidently so for law enforcement types/witnesses while on duty. If the CEO assassin had kidnapped or had tried to rob him first and then killed him, it would be 1st degree. Maybe they will determine other charges that will work and upgrade the chargers to murder 1. For practical purposes, it isn't going to make much difference if he is found guilty of murder 2..
Under NYS Law, it's not Murder 1. Doesn't qualify. But, in this case it really doesn't matter, he'll get life w/o parole.
“Social engineering” could be as simple as calling the publicly available phone number of the event organizer and asking when a specific speaker was scheduled and what room they would be speaking in....

I just asked myself that same question when I read the article. He lives in Pa., deliberately went to NY City with the weapon to shoot this guy, obviously staked him out, and followed through on his plans. New York State doesn't have the death penalty, but he should still be charged with 1st degree murder.
I don't recall any mention of where he was staying after he dropped of the radar screen in Hawaii. He certainly would be familiar with Philadelphia since he went to school there. It seems to me he would have to stay at a hostel or cheap hotel somewhere. I guess eventually it will come out in court documents..
Has there been anything about his having dropped off communications with his family at the same time? I hadn't even heard he'd been in Hawaii. Details about his movements have been pretty hush-hush.
From what I’ve read, he had a 6 month internship at Stanford and then worked briefly at a couple Silicon Valley companies and then headed to Hawaii. His mom sent a missing person report to San Fransisco, so she didn’t know he was in Hawaii. One of the Hawaii roommates came forward after they caught him..
Thanks for that info. Wonder why he went to Hawaii, and who he met in the six months he lived there.
Looks to me he went there to goof off. Articles suggest he was staying at some sort of youth hostel and made some friends before disappearing. I am guessing he is a trust fund baby and decided he didn't like working after a couple of years.
