Service academies arose back when we believed engineers in the military that our armed forces demand. Very few service grads receive engineering degrees. They now receive degrees in less mission-essential fields like political science and economics, even as we need engineers more than ever.

There’s a lot of government land no one wants to buy unless they are exempted by the hazardous cleanup costs.

And it is folks in the eastern states that will object the most to selling “national” lands, and of course they will, because unlike western states they hold 90%+ of THEIR lands.
Air support missions can’t be made without gaining air supremacy. The Soviets found this out against Germany, and we did, too by trying to push just bombers over their territory.
You have to sweep the skies of enemy fighters before you can use aircraft as flying artillery. Otherwise your flying tanks all auger in.
If your numbers are current & accurate, 61% engineering, science, mathematics, a clear majority. Work on your addition skills.

It seems like there are plenty of ways to save gooberment money without tearing down Icons which is the equivalent of the left's tearing down statues and renaming military bases.
The marines are amphibious. Sh what were they doing in Beruit besides getting themselves blown up?
Air Force-all the planes? I dunno. When the A-10 Warthog was on the chopping block it was suggested the Marines could take over. During the Mayaguez incident the marines had to use AF helicopters. The captain ordered the AF pilot where too land and the pilot-a buck sergeant-told him to go f himself.
I disagree with consolidating them all into one. I think they should probably be downsized as far as not continuing to add or shore up outmoded buildings on campuses, and I like the idea of sending cadets to other academies for units of study rather than overduplication at each academy. I agree with refocusing on engineering, and absolutely deplore women in combat and officer ranks over men. Just. No.
I am not in favor of fewer locations. Each of the academies needs to have some particular areas of expertise and accompanying R&D at their respective locations.
But because the nature of war has changed, we need smaller, yet many installations, in many locations.

All arguments should be on the table. ALL, not just the ones we don’t like. Different branches would fight each other to the death rather then do what it takes to save the tax burden on the American people’s backs.
As a person who lived his life in uniform, I’m going to educate you. The US military has separate branches, but they fight under ONE commander as a team. You mention how the Coast Guard comes under the Navy when we’re at war, but that’s how ALL the services fight in an actual war. One boss, like when General Swarzkopf, US Army, was in charge of Desert Shield/Storm. General Horner, the Air Boss I worked for, was subordinate to Gen Swarzkopf, and did what he was told to do. The Marine General worked for Gen S, not for the Commandant. That also applied to the Navy commander in the Gulf. I can’t speak with personal knowledge for Iraq or Afghanistan, as I retired before 9/11, but it was the same.
