Oregon, Georgia, Boise State, Arizona State top CFP field play
Andrea Adelson, ESPN Senior Writer Dec 8, 2024, 12:36 PM ET
Undefeated Oregon earned the No. 1 overall seed in the first 12-team College Football Playoff field announced Sunday, while SMU -- despite a loss in the ACC championship game -- nudged out Alabama to earn the final spot.
No. 2 seed Georgia (11-2), No. 3 seed Boise State (12-1) and No. 4 seed Arizona State (11-2) were awarded first-round byes, guaranteed to the four highest-rated conference champions.
Clemson (10-3), which unexpectedly won the ACC title on a last-second 56-yard field goal, missed out on a first-round bye and was seeded No. 12. The Tigers will play at No. 5 seed Texas (11-2).
The other first-round matchups are: No. 11 seed SMU (11-2) at No. 6 seed Penn State (11-2); No. 10 seed Indiana (11-1) at No. 7 Notre Dame (11-1); and No. 9 seed Tennessee (10-2) at No. 8 seed Ohio State (10-2).
Those first-round games will be played Dec. 20 and Dec. 21 at home sites.

I thought the third seed would get them a New Years Day game, but apparently Boise State is playing in the Fiesta Bowl on New Years Eve. Sucks as I have a commitment and won’t be able to watch the game.
This is Boise State’s fourth appearance in the Fiesta Bowl and they have won each of the previous games.
PSU will smack the ponies in the white out and beat the other ponies in the Fiesta.
I wonder if Army played ND closer if they could have gotten in.
LOL- “First-round byes are guaranteed to the four highest-rated conference champions,”
And that is absolutely absurd...Texas, Penn State, ND all deserved higher seeds than Az State....
Need to expand to 16 teams and get rid of the bye
You will be eating crow
I’m rooting for Arizona State. I think they are legit.
Fight fiercely, Boise State,
Fight, fight, fight!
Demonstrate to TBD our skill.
Albeit they possess some minor might,
We surely have the will.
We’ll hurl that spheroid down the field
How we shall celebrate our victory,
Fight, fight, fight
Fight fiercely, Boise State,
fight, fight, fight!
Impress them with our prowess, do!
Oh, fellows, do not let down the orange and blue,
Be of stout heart and true.
Come on, chaps, fight for Boise State’s glorious name,
And won’t it be peachy when we win the game?
And do fight fiercely, Boise State!
Fight, fight, fight!
(Apologies to the late, great Tom Lehrer)
Tom is still with us. I believe he’s 96.
I won’t be watching. Strength of schedule is meaningless.
There is no team in the playoffs to support. SMU is TCU 2.0 and will be annihilated. Clemson, Tennessee, Indiana and Boise Junior College are also average teams. BORING.
I wish Alabama would decline the bowl invitation. Who cares about playing in a meaningless bowl against a no-name team? Bowls are obsolete and I won’t be watching, What a disastrous season; Our victory over Georgia was the only highlight.
I hope the sec loses. Thank goodness for the Premier League and the Bundesliga.
Bowls are exhibition games. Time to classify it as such. They should all be in Florida, California or Hawaii. Use that as a opportunity to reward the players and their boosters.
I guess before posting about Tom Lehrer, I should...
...Be Prepared.
I think SMU beats them. James Franklin never wins meaningful games.
Yeah, but they’ll just be foaming at the mouth regarding who is 16...lots of 17’s will be pissed.
Waste of time for me. I certainly don’t remember who won the championship in 2010....
LOL- and you’ll be eating crap....
Boise is officially Pac-12, I guess: totally unearned top-4 seed. I usually complain about the LACK of respect shown non-major conference teams, including Boise State’s undefeated season, the Big East’s 5-0 bowl season, etc., but how does Boise St rank above Big 12 champ (using that word loosely) Arizona State, one-loss Indiana, etc. Or how about Army which didn’t make it at all?
Also go figure that Notre Dame was a field goal away from undefeated... but what do you make of the fact that one loss was to Northern Illinois???
Bowls are neither obsolete nor meaningless. From a team perspective its another three weeks of practice to work in freshman and others. Coaches want even low level bowl games to keep the team on the field practicing.
Its also important from a recruiting platform.
Except for Ohio State, who lost by 1 point, Boise played Oregon closer than any other team on the Ducks schedule. They lost 37-34. Only PSU yesterday scored as many points against Oregon.
They are legit.
I don’t think there is a dominant team here, it’s a matter of who gets hot at the right time.
