College Football Playoff bracket, rankings reveal: Who made the 12-team field?

After four-plus months of on-field results and politicking by coaches, athletic directors and fans, the College Football Playoff selection committee announced Sunday the 12-team field.

The biggest question coming into Sunday was who would earn the final at-large spot between Alabama and SMU.

The committee put SMU (11-2) in the field one night after it lost 34-31 to Clemson on the last-second field goal in the ACC championship game. Alabama (9-3) is out after not making its conference title game.

Agree ASU is a sleeper.
The Devils are now riding high and Skattebo is fun to watch … fast, stout as a fireplug but mobile and with ‘four-way hips’!

Army was fun to watch. I wonder how they would do if included in the playoff.

READ - Bulldogs 1st round bye

What is up with the first round bye for the top 4 ranked teams? Why not just have a sweet sixteen playoff? Under the current format the top 4 teams don't have to worry about getting banged up until the quarter finals.

A camel is horse designed by a committee.

A committee produced the 2023 National Championship game that saw Georgia beat TCU 65 to 7.

I have enjoyed watching college football this season.

I’m fully prepared to be disappointed by what transpires from this expanded playoff system overseen by a committee.

Army was fun to watch.

Their quarterback, Bryson Daily, was good enough to carry Monken's unimaginative offense. It showed against Notre Dame. Why Monken abandoned the triple-option? I don't know. I suspect Monken is auditioning for a higher-profile gig...a gig where the triple option would never do (in today's pass-happy offenses).

And that's just it. If Army ran the trip-op, other than once in a blue moon, they'd have an excellent chance of upsetting a couple of teams.

I wonder how they would do if included in the playoff.

Without the TO? Army would get crushed.

Sad, that.

Golden era? Not yet. The NCAA next needs to open the portal window for two weeks before the playoffs start so teams can fix the weaknesses that have now been exposed. Think of the ratings boost and the $$$!!!!

Let the fans juice the NIL slush funds at the same time. People would go wild. I’m agnostic about letting the gambling interests participate here; maybe cap them at a reasonable $100 million apiece. Wealthy alums, of couse, would have no cap, because this is college football and we want students and alums to remain the foundation.

This would take some work, but the final step might well be a system that let fans buy into an online system that lets fans call the plays. We’d have to allow a bit more time, but that’s just an opportunity for a tv timeout between each play. The ADs and the tv networks would be all in. So would the beer companies, probably.

Notre Dame-IU could be interesting. Both teams lack quality wins. Notre Dame lost to Northern Illinois in South Bend. IU lost to Ohio State in Columbus with two uncharacteristic special teams breakdowns ballooning the margin. Notre Dame has given up a lot of points to second tier teams.

Indiana is obviously vulnerable to a good pass rush. Ohio State blitzed them to death, which of course means Ohio State’s defensive backs were fast enough to play man. IU’s receivers are tough and usually sure handed, but they don’t have breakaway speed and rarely get big yards after the catch. The good news for IU is that Ohio State had to blitz to get pressure (as did Michigan the game before). The bad news is that IU didn’t have the speed to burn a gambling defense.

I don’t know how Notre Dame stacks up there.

I got tired of all the “IU hasn’t played anybody” chatter. That was true, but .... IU’s non-conference schedule was weak, as befits IU’s historical status. But then they went into Big XX play, and the Big XX was weird this year. Michigan State, Northwestern, Iowa, Wisconsin and Purdue all went walkabout. But IU still played and beat Michigan, the defending national champion, and Washington, last year’s tournament runner up. But both Michigan and Washington picked this year to slip, leaving IU with a soft conference schedule, playing Ohio State but missing Oregon and Penn State. Weird year.

I don’t give either Notre Dame or IU much of a chance in the semifinal.

In the "Arlo and Janis" strip yesterday, Arlo is ruminating:

"I was pleased when they expanded the college football playoffs"

"I thought, finally!"

"We won't be seeing the same four teams every year"

"So why do I have the nagging suspicion we'll be seeing the same 12 teams every year?"

The old way was better. Win your conference, host a tough team in a bowl. No “National Champion”.
This silly non-national champion concept was pushed by Obama. Barky Obama pushed for a college football playoff system and took credit for it when the Ohio State Buckeyes won the first College Football Playoff in 2015:

They should just move the other conferences, outside of the Big Ten, SEC, ACC, Big 12 and Mountain West to the FCS, where those schools can be more competitive.

Penn State fans relieved they are playing SMU instead of Alabama, S. Car., Ol Miss, or Miami

Why would Penn State be worried about those schools? None of them were good enough to get into the field of twelve.
