I’m not Catholic; but I know my own history, and what caused my turn from organized religion.

There’s a difference between ‘despising’ Christianity, as the OP puts it, and simply turning from the organized churches.

I’ve known lots of political liberals - nearly all of my friends in the past and my coworkers; and I’ve never known one who ‘despised’ Christianity.

I’ve known a lot who didn’t understand it, though.
